That's just my thought, though. I'm really not a Gilbert fan at all.
My point is having this:
XXXX-Smid
XXXX-Schultz
Gilbert-XXXX

looks better than having:
XXXX-XXXX
Smid-Gilbert.

Gilbert still had a role to play with the club, but it was decided that Schultz would perform a better one given our trading constraints.

I was actually impressed, and surprised, by how well Schultz skates. He's like Laddy in that way, a defensive guy that skates well.

He reminds me a lot of Laddi. Bit less physical and a bit better stick, but generally a steady defensive dman that can skate well. I'm hoping we get to see the 2 of them paired together actually. They should be able to go up against any line in the league

Hopefully Musil can develop into another good shut down guy. Having three of them, two of them being huge guys, on the team would be great.

Klefbom could well turn out to be a good shutdown D man, too. And Marincin has apparently been focusing on his defense. At least one of these guys will friggen pan out. Along with Smid, Shultz and Petry our D could one day be good.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Taylor Fedun. It seems he's a forgotten man, he was amazing at training camp before the injury. He's back on his skates and just started training on the ice.

Bang on, He's a defensive guy with wheels. Great gap control.

Probably because he was an unknown back then and he's still an unknown.

Our PP is working because of the elite skill of RNH, Hall, and Eberle, especially when they have extra room. It isn't because of some genius plan from the coaching staff. Getting Horcoff away from the top PP would help it. RNH, Eberle, Gagner, Hall, Petry/Whitney should be the number 1 PP, imo.
Nothing wrong with expanding our lead but wouldn't it be more justified to improve the PK. Our PK is in the middle of the pack. Not god but not great. Schultz gives us a top pairing penalty killer. Where Gilbert was a second line player on the PK/powerplay. We know have 2 top 20 shot blockers in the leagues!

When your other choices are Kurtis Foster and a batch of kids, does that surprise you? I'm surprised he doesn't get 30 minutes a game with that crew out there. No Marek Zidlicky, no Greg Zanon, no Brent Burns, no Nick Schultz anymore.

because its not reasonable to expect anything at this point, he was a fringe player before (impressive training camp), and he suffered a catastrophic injury.

"Fringe" player is being ridiculously harsh, he was an unknown who was having an amazing camp before the catastrophic injury. If he can get his health back to where he was before Erik Nystrom tried to end his career, there's NO reason the Oilers can't hope for something in this player going forward.

There is a long, long list of guys that look mighty impressive in training camp and even possibly the first few games of the season, but when the real shooting gets heavy, they wilt. Not saying Fedun will or won't, but he'll have to re-prove himself again this fall, and then carry it forward into his very first NHL regular season action before we can assume anything. I like this player, but due to the severity of the injury and his lack of experience, will take a wait and see attitude. If it works out, consider it "found money".

I think Fedun would have played in OKC the entire year, and IMO he is exactly the kind of D man they need(ed). A mobile guy who can really move the puck well and has an offensive instinct but didn't look to be a defensive liability. It would have been great to see him play an entire season in the A, but it looks like at best he'll be a year behind.

If Fedun wouldn't have gotten hurt I don't think the Ryan Omarra trade would have happened. It's too bad.

I understand Gilbert is playing on a depleted d core now, but why is Schultz playing so little?

Nice production from him so far.

That's a very good question for our genius coach.

I have wondered about this myself.
My best guess is that Renney is trial running Schultz with a number of different options which accomplishes 2 things. It gives the Smid/Petry pairing more tough minutes which will be good for both of them and it allows Schultz to be paired with other players to get a read on these players. Schultz is pretty solid defensively so it give his partner an opportunity to get his game together. I expect Schultz to be moved around in terms of D partners for the rest of this season.

I don't have a problem with it at this point in the season.

However next season I fully expect Schultz to get top 4 minutes.
