Columbus Blue Jackets FAN Appreciation Thread

Hi, Kings fan coming in peace.

Now that the dust has settled and things have calmed down since the trade deadline I wanted to make this thread. I am actually surprised nobody else did.

I just wanted to say that I am thoroughly impressed with how the Columbus fans are taking this whole year. Your GM is awful and you guys have had some REAL bad luck but I still see all you guys acting and handling these issues with real class which is rare on the hfboards.

As Kings fans we have been through so much as well myself included. So I have an idea of what it feels like but I don't think we have ever felt what you guys are going through right now.

I wish you guys nothing but success and luck ongoing in your future. Even if it comes a few times against the Kings

Jack was a fan favorite here. A lot of Kings fans were sad to see him go. Even the ones that were very happy with the trade like me were sad to see him go as well. Fact of the matter is in 5 years you should if all goes according see Voynov signing a 7 million dollar a year contract.

No problem.

As a fan of a team who is in year 5 of a rebuild. Its not that bad. Its actually fun after the 1st year of the rebuild.

When the Blue Jackets were last in town against the Kings our broadcaster Bob Miller said on AIR that the owner of the Blue Jackets wants to blow up the team and rebuild and that your GM didn't think it was necessary and only needed a few tweaks. With the fact that you guys were big sellers this deadline I believe your owner is getting what he wants and I also believe its the best thing for you guys.

Going forward... I am not sure you can rely on Howson to re build. I think its in the best interest of the club to hire a new GM and a new scouting staff. Thats what we did. And I do think that your going to fire your GM. He made too many mistakes.

With a new GM and a real solid commitment to the rebuild from ownership things should be 100 times better in the next 3-4 seasons. Need a patient GM that isn't going to rush players. Let them develop. Could you imagine how good Brassard, Mason and maybe even Filatov could be right now if your GM developed them the right way?

If you don't fire your scouts you really need to be bad like 1st overall or 2nd overall in the draft because it leaves less room for error. They`ve had a few tough draft picks these last few years.

There is proof now that re building is the best way. With the Kings, Chicago(Cup Winner), Boston(Cup Winner), Ottawa, Penguins(Cup Winner) and now Edmonton and Atlanta the road map should be a lot easier too.

Good luck in the future I will be keeping a close eye for Columbus.

Thank you. Its been a decade long car wreck in slow motion. Maybe someday it'll stop.

Edit: I also wanted to say that as a fan, I appreciate all of you CBJ fans. It hasn't been a glorious time. I don't know any of you personally, but I have much respect for you all.

Just wanted to say thanks for your post. It means a lot. When everywhere we look we see what this organization become, and events like those in the past few days divide a fanbase, it's helpful to have someone with an outside perspective say the things you did.

Thanks for the props.

This is a great group here on the Columbus board. Great knowledge, diverse opinions, and much respect for each-others thoughts and ideas even when we disagree.

And despite the last 11 years we all love our Jackets and want them to succeed in the worst way.

We'll hang until that day comes, and beyond.

For whatever it's worth, I think if the Blue Jacket organization were a different business, say a restaurant, they would have been gone long ago. I think many sports fans have this mentality of "support the team through thick and thin". In my opinion, what this thinking has brought to Blue Jacket fans is a failed organization that is allowed to continue its inept ways without any threat of facing hard consequences. Patrons of a restaurant would never consider having such an allegiance. This kind of devotion to a business is unique to the sports fan to his team. It has the potential to make the fan nothing more than a sucker being preyed upon by his unsuccessful team.

Personally, when I think of the Blue Jackets I think of a business that borders on fraudulent practices, defrauding the fans of a viable product. When I think of a Blue Jacket fan who proclaims "Support the Jackets, Carry the flag", I think of someone who is being duped.

Stop comparing sports teams to other businesses and players to employees. The metaphor doesn't work cause there isn't anything that compares to sports teams and the fans' identification with them. That is its own thing.

Wrong thread for this, apologies.

Thank you!

This is my first season while a member of the HF boards, and these Jackets fans have enriched the experience a whole lot (mostly ). The worst season ever has also been a good one in that respect.

Good luck to your Kings- next year

by the way this probably goes in a different thread, but Jack Johnson is the most impressive player I've ever seen on this Columbus roster. I've never seen a guy so genuinely excited like he is. He seems like he really believes that he is the missing piece here and thinks things are going to turn around. Just seeing how vocal he is on and off the ice, and the intelligence in the way he speaks, if Nash is dealt I want this guy to be seriously considered as the Captain. I can't say enough how impressed I have been with this guys attitude so far (granted he hasn't been here long). I couldn't be more happier to have this guy in the locker room.

You are kidding yourself. Businesses offer a product, in one case food, in the other case hockey entertainment. When the food is not up to customer standards the customer goes elsewhere and the restaurant fails. A sports franchise that puts a substandard product on the ice doesn't go through the same thing because of customers' blind allegiance, a phenomenon unique in the business world to sports franchises. Of course even a fan's allegiance will not go on indefinitely. But the word "fan" comes from the word "fanatic". And there are far more fanatics when it comes to sports teams than there are fanatics for a given restaurant. And it could be that no one knows this better than the Blue Jacket brain trust.

This is where I disagree. The dynamic is not nearly as simple as that. I'm arguing the metaphor is disingenuous. I'm not kidding myself, either.

and here you're acknowledging the point at the which the metaphor breaks down. Cheers.

And in other climes they use the word "supporter". Semantic diversion doesn't support your argument.

Thanks for the thread, appreciate it. When other NHL fans realize that our President Mike Priest and GM Scott Howson need to be relieved from their duties, it makes me wonder why our own Owner JPM doesnt see this. Or at least refuses to admit it or do anything about it.

Columbus really is a great town, and is a great hockey market. I can honestly say, being a part of HFboards, and knowing these fans helps me cope with a tough season like this. There is definitely a sense of camaraderie after going through trials and tribulations such as this season. Some of these posters on here are some of the wittiest people I have ever come across.

Thanks so much for starting this thread. It's been such a frustrating 11 years and to see someone supporting another team offer good wishes, well, it's uplifting. I think we can all say we are heavily invested emotionally -- and financially -- in this team. Some have just reached the breaking point with ownership and management, and will not/ can not take it anymore. No one wants to see this franchise fold. I think that's what drives many of us to get active. To see the national press pick up on this and inform fans from other teams what is happening here, is great. Hopefully, with some big management changes, we can turn things around.
