Olesz

He seems to have done pretty well in the minors, now might be the time to see if he can do anything for this club before deciding to buy him out or bury him in the minors next year. Obviously he would clear waivers to get back up, do you think it will or should happen?

I highly doubt he will get called up during the season. At 3 mil he is overpaid, but another team could grab him at 1.5 on re-entry and its not worth the risk.

Not worth the risk? You really think someone grabs him when he has 2+ years left? And if so, oh well.

The total buyout is more than $3MM anyhow I think.

He really didn't deserve to be sent down. His fate was sealed the second he got traded here. Bought out, buried, whatever. He's not going to play again as a Hawk.

If that were the case then Bowman should have optioned his buyout while he was still 26 years old; the penalty would have been 1/2 what it will be now.

I believe the reason he didn't was because Olesz was injured at the time and buyouts aren't allowed then.

Not worth the risk of him being claimed on re-entry. If he gets claimed off re-entry waivers the Hawks are on the hook for half his salary and cap hit for the duration of his contract.

I'm not an expert on buyouts, but doesn't the cap hit get less as his contract comes closer to being finished?

You know things are bad when people are clamoring for Olesz to be called up.

Rostislav Olesz buyout from CapGeek.com
2012-13: $500,000
2013-14: $250,000
2014-15: $1,375,000
2015-16: $1,375,000

This might have to do with his contract being backloaded, but I'm not sure.

No, but it is still not significant. This from Capgeek (assumes a June 15th 2012 Buyout)

Bloddy Hell. URL/IMG paste fail. I'm getting owned by the HFBoard filters. Give me a few and I'll type this all in...

Salary Cap Hit Buyout Salary Buyout Cap Hit
2012-13 $4,000,000 $3,125,000 $1,375,000 $500,000
2013-14 $4,250,000 $3,125,000 $1,375,000 $250,000
2014-15 $0 $0 $1,375,000 $1,375,000
2015-16 $0 $0 $1,375,000 $1,375,000

*sigh* that looks gay. Sorry. You get the idea...

it's better for us to bury him next year than buy him out

Tell that to Rocky, the guy paying his Salary, to the tune of $8.2M remaining. He would HAPPILY buy a guy out at 2/3 value that he knows isn't going to skate for us.

What do you think the plan is with him, will he get a chance to earn a spot in camp? Assuming we won't add any significant salary.

He had a pretty good season in Rockford (41p in 50g) and is paid $3.125 million this season and the next.

I refuse to feel truly sorry for a guy getting paid that kind of money to toil around in the AHL, but do feel for him since he didn't really get a fair shake before last season.

If he comes to camp motivated and earns a spot, I'd be all for it. He's versatile and can play on basically every line and is likely no worse than Frolik. Add the possibility that he can actually do well and increase his trade value so we maybe can get some asset for him down the line. If he's in Rockford, he'll always have zero value.

Thoughts?

Based only on ability, if Kruger is on this team, Olesz should be too.

May as well risk him being claimed. It doesnt appear the Hawks are going to use that cap space anyway.

no reason to have him in the NHL... I hope a team is willing to take him in a package just to give him a chance
