I would rather a playoff birth a whole lot more. However let's bite the bullet here right now. We are NOT making the playoffs this season barring an epic surge. So I'm all for hopping on Tank Nation right now.

I just want to have a very good hockey team, for a long time.

The current team lacks elite talent outside of Kessel, Gardiner, and, to an extent, Lupul. While we have some nice prospects, I don't see any of them being incredibly game-breaking NHL talents- but I hope I am wrong.

Top five all the way. Trade up to get Grigo and voila, we're well on our way.

Oh, and Phaneuf sucks. lol

A failing franchise will end up winning those sweepstakes (ie Columbus)

Look at the top 5 teams with regards to points right now...and look how many top 5 picks they had since the year 2000...
Vancouver - 0! Last time they had a top 5 was 1999 (Sedins)
Detroit - 0 Last time they had one in top 5 was 1990 (Keith Primeau)
Rangers - 0 Last time 1999 (PAvel Brendl)
St Louis - 2 Eric Johnson... Alex Peitrangelo
Nashville - O....Only have had 1 Ever 1998 David Legwand (first year of team)

Looking at that...I don't see the need to wish for my team to lose...Sure the Sedins are great..but that was quite long ago now and they have been UFA and could be anywhere now.

St Louis already traded EJ and Peitrangelo was only picked right before Luke Schenn.

There are ways to win later without hoping your team loses now...

I remember the Leafs winning a game a the end of the season a few years back, because they wanted to "go out strong". Dropping them 3-4 positions in the draft list.

This team doesn't tank. I'd expect Price to play backwards, while the Leafs run up the score.

On second thought, Price stopped all his saves backwards; Reimer let in his first two shots facing forwards...

Leafs would never win the rigged lottery. If the Leafs were ever in a lottery spot, holding their pick; I can almost guarantee a team immediately behind them will win.

Imagine if Columbus, Buffalo, or New York (Rangers) won the Crosby lottery. The NHL would be incredibly different right now.

Yea we've tried those ways for years already and we're nowhere near any of those franchises in terms of contention. We haven't even made the ****ing playoffs yet and it looks like this year will be no exception.

How much longer do you want to keep spinning in circles?

This is literally the first time I have ever felt so ashamed by the Maple Leafs. At least in the past we were just a team with a bunch of holes, lacking talent. This year we have no real ****ing excuse. We were in a playoff position after 50+games, we have 2 players in the top 10 in scoring, a defenseman in top 10 among defenseman..etc We were the controllers of our own destiny, and we dropped the ball here -- I mean we really ****ing blew our chance. How do we lose against Florida, one of our main competitors for the playoffs, three god damn times this season.

This team has let me down this season.. I really hope we shed some of the dead weight that has been blocking our promising young guys by the start of next season. I don't really fault Burke in terms of roster moves but keeping Wilson around has been the stupidest decision of his life. Not acquiring a bottom 6 player to displace Crabb, and not waiving Lombardi are also some of his questionable decisions as well.

Still hoping they make the playoffs.....5 points out of it with about 19 games left to play. A good run here and we have a good chance. Frustrating to watch how they have been playing over the past 10 games.

I honestly wish they could make the Playoffs because once you get in who knows what could happen. Take the 2006 Oilers and 2010 Canadiens as a great example of 8th place teams who made the Stanley Cup Finals or Conference Finals in those years.

However I voted for them to tank because at this time they have lost 9/10 games at the wrong time, plus they have Tampa Bay and Buffalo 1 point behind in the standings and they can fall back farther. So they might as well try and go for the best draft position as possible and at least this year we don't have to worry where it ends up since Boston doesn't have our 1st round pick.

Honestly forget the pick, if Wilson gets canned for not making the playoffs, I'll take that over making the playoffs than Wilson staying here even longer and being extended again. Please just tank now, get a great pick, and get this run and gun system the **** out.

I think you guys would benefit huge from tanking (Grigorenko is ours!). Not much point in making a run at the cup this year IMO. I do understand the appeal of playoffs though especially when you haven't been there for so long. Tank now, give it another year or 2 and Leafs will have no problem holding a top 8 spot with a real chance of a cup.

Here's the problem:

Quote:
Entertainment: The Toronto Maple Leafs, as a sports franchise, ought to play to their audience. Burke firmly stated that his teams play a run and gun style, because the high cost of admission demands exciting hockey. He continued by stating that he could hire defensive minded coaches who will adopt a 1 – 3 – 1 or even a 1 – 4, and sign players who excel in trap settings. He said he wanted a team that trades chances, scores and fights and concluded that he was satisfied with his success bringing in 2/3rds of what he wanted. He again lamented Colton Orr’s situation.

http://mapleleafshotstove.com/2012/0...h-brian-burke/
This may be the reason why Wilson has gone from a solid defensive system in San Jose to this ****. Hopefully he learns his lesson after he cans Wilson otherwise a new coach won't make a difference.

obviously I'll say make the playoffs.....we will not draft 1 or 2 so the 'big' boys are off the table.
can we draft well if we are not in the top 5? heck yes but our needs will not change. We need a number 1 center, a big body or 2 up front and some goal-tending help.

I think the draft this year does not address our needs.....right now. (maybe a few years down the road )
Burke......trade.....mho.

wow, some of you guys need to give your head a shake.... We are ONLY in 10th, 4 POINTS OUT @ the end of Feb.

If anything the playoffs, even if we don't make it past the 1st round, will be amazing for this team's growth & Development.

Some of you think that missing the playoffs will be good because we get a pick. I'd take the playoffs, no matter how short because the experience of the playoffs will do far better for this young team in the long run then to have a good pick.

Nail or Grigorenko will probably go 1-3 so unlikely we are going to finish there. Galchenyuk is probably around 5 even with missing this year, can't see him slipping to 9. So maybe we can get him if we slide, but I really like Grigorenko, he's not far behind Yakupov if behind at all, but it would seem unlikely Leafs just don't tank.

This is the correct answer. 6th place should have been our goal, a matchup against Caps, Jets or Panthers would be great. Once that slipped away, I hated the thoughts of a Boston or Rangers matchup. I just hope Oilers stay behind Habs for a couple reasons. 1. Habs don't get Yakapuv and 2. Oilers would probably trade down and we do have a shot at 4th overall. 4th overall, 2nd round, 3rd round, Schenn, Komi, and any of our goalie prospects for 2nd overall.? Lupul - Yakapuv - Kessel makes me drool Holzer can replace Schenn
