I FIGURED IT OUT! I don't know why it took me so long but now that they are on the same team it's quite obvious. Cody Hodgson, if he reaches his potential, will be a Derek Roy. Great player, boarderline 1C and a little undersized. That stats are eerily similar too...

I posted this yesterday. I see them as the same sort of player. Yes it sucks to lose a player like that, but Kesler and Henrik are and will be better for years to come.
The trade is a great, and RARE, swap of top prospect for top prospect. HF's wet dream.
Is there a solid source that CoHo and his people asked for more ice time? or is this a rumor...

His agent said they asked for more ice time on twitter...... pretty derpy move

Sekeras and Botchford confimed on Cody's agent's twitter account that Cody did meet with AV Saturday and asked for more icetime as he felt he deserved it.
He never asked for a trade, but it sure facilitated one.

Well, what kind of idiot (edit: talking about Rich Winter here) asks for more minutes, 2 days before the trade deadline, when he has 3 points in his last 13 games while playing the softest minutes on the team without expecting it to backfire. Honestly, I just cannot understand that move.
His agent should be fired for this whole situation. He's embarrassing his client on twitter.
Bad comparison if you ask me. Roy is a better comparison for Schroeder than he is Hodgson. Hodgson is about 4 inches taller than Roy (atleast 3) and as far as I'm concerned they have different strengths, weaknesses, and intangibles. People need to lose the "undersized" idea, the guy is a hair under 6 ft. tall. He needs to add some size, but he will naturally fill out as he gets older.

A young player that probably had his agent wispering in his ear and didnt think the consequences through.

I have AV so much as the coach of this team...
If that's true, it's disappointing on Hodgson's part and does validate my feeling that AV was the driving force behind the trade, for better or for worse.

Yeah, I'm not blaming Cody (see my edit). I'm blaming his agent and his parents who seemed to all be heavily involved. I think he's getting all the wrong advice right now.

Found some info for those that havent come across is

@taj1944 No. I just find speculation fascinating. We didn't demand trade. Cody had a great meeting with Alain on Sat. Trade was a surprise.
Quote:
@taj1944 Now we did ask for more ice time.
- Ritch Winter, Hodgson's agent
And, hate AV? (assuming thats what you meant.)
Sorry, but you do not ASK for ice time. You earn it.. I dont have a problem with them asking about this but at the same time, this is a contender. You have to produce if you want more time. Hodgson did nothing on the 2nd line C spot, and has been inconsistent, which is to be expected. We need a solid bottom 6 though, as we are out battled there by the Bruins and paid by scoring less when Kesler had to focus on shut down duty.
Young players have come up the ranks with AV just fine. Edler, Burrows, and Schnieder are just a few examples. AV is not the problem.
Show me a young player that has left the AV coached Canucks and gone on to be a better player. There isnt one.
Also, GMMG is not going to like hearing an agent is telling his coach how to COACH.
Id look at trading Hodgson too. Shades of Lindros...

Cody is a rookie, he needs to know his place and trust his coach. The Sedins got less ice time than he did as rookies, look how they turned out. He can't be asking for things like that, he needs to accept his role. This was probably the final straw, as it should be. If Cody is having playing a minimal role on a top contender for a couple years then he shouldn't be here, period.
I don't blame a coach for getting a bit pissed off about this. It's not about Cody, it's about the team. I'm sure Cody had good intentions when he was asking, but still. Look at Randy Moss in New England (NFL) a few years back, he kept *****ing about wanting a new contract mid season, they got fed up, and traded him. This is what should have happened sadly enough, Hodgson kind of dug his own grave with this request.

What could AV do? Hodgson couldn't play the wing, or a shut-down role. He wasn't going to supplant Sedin or Kesler any time soon either...
I like where these moves have put us; we've given ourselves a chance to make a run this year - and set ourselves up to pick up a big defensive piece (i.e. Weber) in the off-season.

You can podcast it if you like, but it was clearly said by Botchford first in the 8 am hour and then by Sekeras in the 10 am hour.
Pretty confident it is accurate and was twittered. I have checked the account and he has deleted he earlier statement and now said Cody never asked for ice time or trade, so...

Not sure how you guys figure that. I think there's a slim chance, provided Weber only signs a 1 year deal again, that we could offer a contract to him in 2013. And that's about it.
Here's how I see things going into next season
Daniel Sedin (6.1) / Henrik Sedin (6.1) / Alexandre Burrows (2)
David Booth (4.25) / Ryan Kesler (5) / Kassian (0.87)
Higgins (1.9) / Malhotra (2.5) / Raymond (2.55)
Jannik Hansen (1.35) / Maxim Lapierre (1) / Byron Bitz (0.77)
Dale Weise (.67)
35.06
DEFENSEMEN
Dan Hamhuis (4.5) / Kevin Bieksa (4.6)
Alexander Edler (3.25) / RHS defenceman (5.532)
Aaron Rome (0.9) / Salo (2)
Alberts (1.225)
22.007
GOALTENDERS
Roberto Luongo (5.333) / Backup (1)
6.333
63.4
Give or take a few hundred thousand for the missing defenceman and guys like Weise, Bitz and our new backup. I suppose Sami could stay for one more year, or perhaps he'll retire and be replaced by Tanev at 900k, and Raymond resigning at his current rate seems fair to me.
Unless Gillis decides to resign Pahlson, in which case Raymond is gone. I have a feeling though they hope Malhotra can return to 3rd line centre form next year.
We have a fair bit of room for a RHS defenceman to paired with Edler. Yes, Weber is ideal - and, we have our 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks...but he'd have to come in around 5.5. If Gillis were to offersheet him a 10 year contract similar to Ehrhoff's Nashville would match imo.
Again - it's 2013 that we'll have to wait for. Which means Gillis may try to target a partner for Edler that has 1 year left on his contract (Leopold?) and will either be
a) a shut-down RHS (someone like Schenn wit h better skating would be ideal)
or
b) An Ehrhoff type defenceman focused on offense. Probably more likely the latter given how the team has been constructed thus far.
I hate to say it but in the offseason I would explore the market for Ryan Kesler. His value is likely at an all time high, and considering he's had two major hip surgeries (surgeries that have caused others to retire) and the speed element of his game I'm not sure how long of a career he has as an elite forward.
I wouldn't give him up for just anyone, but if we can acquire pieces that make us better today and in the future it makes sense.
I know this won't be popular, and I love Kesler as much as the next fan. But thinking logically and outside the box it might be what's best for the organization. Thoughts?

He has an NTC, Gillis won't ask him to move it.
I think it would be a bit hasty to trade after one sub-standard season, after a full offseason of training I think he'll come back as good as he's ever been next year.
