2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs/Finals

Rangers fan coming in peace.

I have a pretty basic question about the 2010 SC Playoffs.

What would you guys say were the strong points on why you won the Cup that year? (offense, defense, goaltending, etc.)

It is my understanding that strong defense was a big part of it.

Thank you in advance.

1. Best forward depth post-lockout
2. Key players such as Bolland and Byfuglien stepped up huge in playoffs
3. Career year from Duncan Keith
4. Timely goaltending
5. Ladd-Bolland-Versteeg, Keith-Seabrook formed elite shutdown group.
6. Luck

I am having a debate with a few folks on the 2010 run and how while offensive teams have been Cup winners in recent years, those same teams that were top scoring teams also had very good defense that season as well.

PS - just want to say Chicago is a great town and its good to see hockey is back in that town once again.

They were far and away the best team in the league. And they had an incredible ability to play whatever style the opponent chose. Teams wanted to run and gun, Hawks could outgun them. Teams wanted to grind it out, Hawks could out-grind them.

I remember playing that team and losing in OT (Byfuglien). I wish they kept track of possession like they do in soccer cause it mustve been 80-20 Blackhawks. If not for Hank, it couldve been 6-0.

Was defense a big part of the reason for the success that year?

Absolutely defense was a big part. A lot of that was because we had the puck so much but our defense as a whole was so much better.

09/10: 5th in goals allowed, 1st in shots on goal allowed(almost 200 less shots than next best), 4th in PK%. Goaltending was awful when Huet played and good but not great when Niemi played. Forwards and defensemen won us that Cup.

also Hammer was the best he ever was, he was getting huge hype after that season.

Norris Keith-Seabrook
Hammer-Campbell

you don't get a much better top 4 than that.

Worth noting that the bottom pairing was 2 of: Hendry, Sopel, and Boynton. Although Sopel was a shot blocking machine.

Crazy forward depth, solid defense, and good enough goaltending.

If Niemi had been injured they may have lost in the playoffs with Huet. Scary thought for a Blackhawks fan.

(I remember that game against the Rangers. Buff had an end-to-end rush in OT and beat Lundqvist short side.)

Everything was top end except the goaltending but Niemi had his moments too.

This, plus the swagger that allowed them to never be out of a game. If the game was a grinder game, and they were behind they'd open it up, seemingly at will.

In the playoffs: Keith, Toews, Buff, Bolland and Ladd were the leaders and at least one of them rose to the occasion on a given night.

Niemi was flipping spectacular in the San Jose series. He was the best player on either team by a mile. If the Hawks got a performance out of him in that SJ series like Crawford just gave us agaisnt Phoenix, it might be the Sharks that were 2010 Stanley cup champs.

I think our actual defensive play had little to do with it. It was our puck possession game along with a defense that was very effective at joining the rush. It was the ability to send wave after wave of quality chances that just overmatched opposing teams.

Hell, our defense wasn't even that much better than what we have now. It's just how they were used that was utilized to perfection. Why we got away from that is beyond me.

We couldve had that damn game. I remember Staal taking the puck in, possibly on a power play, the puck came out and Gilroy and Gaborik were the only two chasing Byfuglien.
