I think you guys are overreacting on the Castro at bat. Axford is one of the best closers in the games. 1st pitch was an 85 MPH breaking ball that started in the zone and fell out. 2nd pitch was another breaking ball(84 mph) that just hit the bottom of the strike zone. Castro is down 2-0 and basically has to guess at this point. He guesses another breaking ball, possibly out of the zone but he gets 96 mph fastball. Just great pitching by Axford there. Especially since Castro thinks he might throw one out of the zone or waste a pitch. He definitely wasn't thinking fastball right down the pipe. Obviously wasn't a great at bat and shouldn't have chased the breaking ball but he was looking to explode on a 1st pitch fast ball.
Great post minus the 2-0/0-2 minor gaffe.
My uncle and I were watching the game and we both said the exact same thing after the third strike; he was not guessing fastball and it froze him. You don't see that kid strike out very often. Was a combination of a not-so-great at bat chasing the first breaking ball and some good pitching/pitch-calling. If you're looking off-speed or something moving and get a fast ball your results are not going to be good. He guessed wrong. Game over. Live to fight another day today.
i agree it was amazing pitching by axford but it was still an awful at bat. 3 pitch strikeout with 2 runners on and down by two runs with the game on the line. at least foul something off. or swing at the strikes. that fastball froze him bc he was too aggressive earlier in the AB. castro is a beast, but it was a terrible at bat especially considering the circumstances. he's better than that
i see what you're saying and i probably was overreacting lol, but there were two outs in the bottom of the ninth. not necessarily a time to be aggressive on the first pitch. especially on a breaking ball
Castro got to the majors by being a free swinger and is an elite offensive SS. You don't change what works.
again, i never said he wasn't an elite offensive SS. i love that he's a "free swinger", but that doesn't mean i think he should swing at anything and everything, especially with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. we'll just have to agree to disagree lol
I was supposed to go to the Cubs game tonight, but a friend couldn't make it so I bailed too. The weather more than anything kept me away (it's like 40 there right now, with 10-20mph winds. At this point, I'm kind of glad I didn't drive all the way down there to watch us go down 0-5 in the first inning with only one out, while freezing my ass off. Definitely the right call.
Down in Champaign for the next couple days, and gonna be going to the Illinois/Mizzou baseball game tomorrow at Busch Stadium with my dad, so should make for a fun little trip. First time I'll be at their new stadium, too, so it'll be a nice visit.
