Physical play in the NHL

Alright it's a simple question, and please no ridiculous arguments about specific players or incidents; in general do you think that players who play a tough physical style of hockey should at least be willing to fight when necessary? And if your opinion is that fighting is not a necassary in hockey at all then your answer is simply NO.

No. I'm guessing this is geared towards Ott.

If you can't back it up, don't dish it out.

if they make clean checks then it's the opposition's responsibility to not retaliate/take a penalty. but if it's occasionally borderline (like kronwall) or just downright cheap (like marchand), then they should expect someone to be knocking on the doorstep.

In certain circumstances you can be obligated to fight IMO, but after a clean hit is not one of them.

After a very dirty play is the most obvious one I.E, Shelley had to fight Rosie here (although Rosehill wasn't going to give him a chance to say no):

If you are a huge hitter, but clean, I see no reason for you to have to fight.

You know what other by-the-rules play that bothers me when it happens against my team? Goals. Instead of having to fight some knuckle-dragger because a player laid a big hit, players should have to fight after every goal instead.

It's just hard to defend not having to fight for making a clean play....

I think it looks so bush league when one guy lands a beautiful clean hit and some goon who averages 6 minutes per game jumps him and tries to pound his face in.

If it's a dirty hit IE: check from behind, knee, hit to the heat, crosscheck, feet leaving ice on big hit, elbow or player getting hit is knocked out, I think it's fair game.

I don't know why, I've got a feeling this is not going as planned for the OP.

I agree with this. If you hit AND play like a rat then yeah. But for big, clean hits? No, go sit down.

Hitting is part of the game just as scoring goals are. A scores doesn't have to stand up for himself, so why should someone who dishes out hits, as long as they are clean? If you feel like you gotta punch someone in the face simply for being physical in hockey, then maybe you're playing the wrong sport.

When you try to someone deliberately its not "part of the sport" anymore. If that were the case matt cooke and sean avery would be praised like Gods.

This is a poll and nothing more. There are no hidden agenda's and it has nothing to do with me. It's going exactly how I thought it would and I am interested to see how it develops. Thanks for voting.

This. I don't care who you are, you have no obligation to fight after a clean hit.

In most cases I'd say yes. There are however exceptions.

Alexei Emelin, for example, has a metal plate in his face and the doctors disallow him from fighting as he could get huge damage. His style is a physical one and in order to have a successful career and make a living, he must play that way. But he can't back it up.

This is a tough situation and the exception to the rule in my opinion. Obviously Emelin can't fight, in my opinion I feel like because of this he should tone it down a bit, but at the same time if physical play is keeping him in the league then how can anyone tell him to stop playing this way. Which is why Emelin should be excluded from this discussion as a unique situation.

A good clean hitter shouldnt have too. But most guys who play a physical style cross the line sometimes (even if by accident) and youve just gotta man up and accept your lumps sometimes.

Either that or your star player is getting ran.

Unless you got titanium plates in your face jeopardizing your life/health/career if you get that unlucky punch, I think it's fine if you can answer the bell from time to time.

Fighting is definitely part of the game, but not an integral part of it in my opinion. Still wouldn't want to see it banned.

This died a week ago but in light of all the recent Kronwall discussion I wanted to bring it back up to see if more people would vote....
