Hi guys! I have been coming on this website for a couple of months now and I just decided to create a log in so I could post my thoughts on next years line combo's/starting roster.
Now, lets just say, somehow and someway, we were able to pick up Suter, Parise, and Semin, with Lidstrom coming back. ****DISCLAIMER: I did not do cap structure so lets just say....IT WORKS****
My first game of the season line Combinations would be this:
Parise - Datsyuk - Semin
Filppula - Zetterberg - Franzen
Helm/Abdelkader - Helm/Abdelkader - Bertuzzi
Nyquist - Mursak - Miller (Not sure who the center is here....if none of them are, then one can change positions ) Tatar - if he has to come up because of whatever restrictions....
Lidstrom - Suter
Kronwall - Smith
White - Quincey
Ericsson
Yes, you guessed it! People are missing and here is why:
Hudler - Yes, he can be very good, but he will ask for a lot because of his revamped stats compared to last years....we have to let him walk and bite the bullet. Cleary - Honestly, I love him. This season has been hard for him and it sucks, but I think with the acquisition of Parise/Semin we will be fine. Emmerton and Kindl - We were able to trade these two guys to Nashville before the Draft and got Suter's rights, while throwing in our 2012 third rounder, to make sure that we do get him. I believe a lot of teams with go after Suter with there firsts and we don't have ours. I would rather not get rid of the second, so third would be ok. Holmstrom - Again, I love this guy to. I think he gets much more flak than he should because he has never skated well and people here highlight that more than ever. I don't feel like he should be on the last line because if you watch closely to him on the ice, it seems like he bypasses the young forwards (Emmerton and Mursak) and throws the puck to the point, which is perfectly fine, but sometimes (like against jackets last night) one of them were wide open and could have scored. So, he will be in the office and a consultant to the team to show players how to do epic tips in front of the net and maybe groom a player or two to work hard in front of the net like he did.
So that was my lines for the first part of the season...
Now let's go with near the trade deadline. I believe a couple moves will happen. I like Nyquist and I honestly believe he is "our rookie". What I mean by "our rookie" is that it seems like everyone has a rookie that is really good.
Line Combos by Deadline:
Parise - Datsyuk - Nyquist
Franzen - Zetterberg - Semin Filppula - Helm - Bertuzzi
Mursak - Abdelkader - Miller Tatar - if he has to come up because of whatever restrictions....
White - Suter
Lidstrom - Kronwall
Quincey - Smith
So there are some changes. I believe Nyquist will be feeding Parise and Datsyuk all year if he got the shot to do it. This line would be the best in the league, easily. Semin dropped because he was not playing "as hard" as Nyquist and Nyquist got a shot at the wing and Babcock noticed they scored 4 goals in one game and kept with it. I believe Datsyuk would blow out everyone for the Art Ross because he will turn into a sniper now, with Nyquist feeding him and Parise, and in return Datsyuk would feed the others every once in awhile with his magic.
I honestly think Filppula sucks as a center. He went to the wing this year and look how he has done? With a third line of finesse (Filppula), hard word and dedication (Helm), with the decade of experience (Bertuzzi), I think this line would be a very dynamic third line and could be one of the best in the game.
Mursak will never get that shot so he will stay down for now. Miller has really always been a last line person. Abdelkader will just get forced down because of the talent already in the first three lines. Although, I guess you could move Helm down instead and keep Abdelkader at center. Going to be honest here guys, I never really liked Abdelkader, but I don't see Management moving him, which is fine, I guess.
Defense has changed as well. With Suter showing a Norris year (He will win in his first year with us, guarenteed because White will continue what he has done this season with Liddy (I call Lidstrom Liddy by the way)). Lidstrom WILL move down so he stays fresh, come on he's going to be 43...right? Smith will play every once in awhile on the top line and second line through the season, but will have to stay lower because of the contracts in front of him. Ericsson stays out of the shuffle, but comes in from time to time to play against "bigger" teams, i.e. SJ, maybe STL, etc.
Honestly, what do you guys think? Yes it is a lot to take in, but hopefully you read through it and said this could actually work. Honestly, this can work as long as it is under the cap.
Buffalo went over the cap a little...so what does that do to your team? If Detroit could go over a little bit, then that would be great.
Let me know guys, I am eager to hear what some of you think, even though I know some answers will be ridiculous lol

I honestly didn't read the whole thing but I can tell you right off the bat Suter, Parise, Semin and Lidstrom all on the same team is completely impossible per cap rules. I don't know what their lines will be next year but pretending all three of those guys sign and Lidstrom comes back for a million dollars at that point is a pipe dream. Utterly impossible, bump the thread if I am wrong and I will outright apologize with glee. I think the best case scenario is we wind up with Suter, Semin and Lidstrom, even that will be difficult. If we get both Lidstrom and Suter, then things get interesting because they can pull a significant trade before camp opens with the defensive depth they will have. Either way it is much to early to tell.
Hypothetically lets say we somehow convince Semin, Parise and Suter to all come to Detroit at their current cap hits.
We qualify Helm and Abdelkader as they are on your roster and are RFA's this offseason, we unload Cleary, Eaves, Kindl and Emmerton without taking any salary back, and allow Holmstrom, Stuart and Hudler to either retire or leave as FA's.
We'd still have to figure out a way to sign Lidstrom for negative 1.6 Million to get under the cap.
Considering the raises we'll have to give to some of those UFA's we'd be lucky to get any of them.

maybe he's willing to take a super hometown discount?
Ok, so this would not work? Provided I didn't miss anybody....i took out quincey, let's say he didn't work out and we had to take some draft picks after someone offer sheeted him or we traded his rights for a first or second round pick..........

The major problem with this is no team is going to start a season with only 20 skaters and no cap space if injuries occur. We would be one injury away form disaster. Holland will always want a 23 man roster if he has a choice.
The most likely situation is that Tatar makes the club (will be out of options?) and Nyquist (although ready right now) is sent back to GR for another year. Smith makes the team as a top four (hopefully) and we add one of the big name free agents (not including Lidstrom, who will be back IMO, he wants to play at the Big House). Think Hudler will price himself out of Detroit, although he supposedly wants to stay here. Lines will be, IMO, the following:
Parise/Datsyuk/Bertuzzi
Filppula/Zetterberg/Franzen
Miller/Helm/Cleary
Tatar/Abdelkader/Mursak (Homer, Emmerton (although still don't see a future for him with the wings))

Isn't this Tatar's third year in GR? Will be exposed to waivers thereafter.
He signed his first NHL contract at age of 18 (september 2009), so he is waiver exempt for the first 5 years, until he passes 160 NHL games.
So basically he is exempt for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons if he is not a full time player at main roster at both of those seasons. And I can't see that he would be. He's not that level yet.

Parise and Suter probably don't get to July 1. Even if they do, Holland probably can't land them. Signing Bert was ridiculous. Locking up Hudler at around $3M should have been a bigger priority. Holland has no clue on market value, so he probably offers Hudler $3M and is shocked when someone else goes $4M+. So he's gone. So here is what Holland probably does:

Bert traded. Cleary traded. Homer retired. That gives us $7M cap space to add Roy, Nyquist, and Tatar. Why was Bert signed again?
Bert was resigned because A) He has good chemistry with Pav, B)Need to have veterans b/c Homer is likely to be gone, C) Is really good in shootouts, has gotten this team like 3 or 4 additional points alone, and most importantly D) To secure him for his impending trial, the Wings need to keep up a reputation as being extremely player-friendly; it's stuff like that that makes the Wings the best organization in hockey.
