2011-2012 Rangers Magic Number Thread (We Did It!)

Since Mayor Bee remembered to do his annual Magic Number thread on the main boards (which I wanted to do this year), I decided I'll do one here, but instead, I'm only concentrating on the Rangers.

I am now using tiebreakers. Also, I'm assuming that all even amount of points we get are won in regulation or overtime.

SeedTeam In SeedGRPTSTotal Possible PointsPoints Needed to Clinch Seed
1NYR0109109Clinched

(In order of total possible points.)

Bonus:

Presidents' Trophy:
TeamGRPTSTotal Possible PointsPoints Needed to Clinch Trophy
1NYR11091114 (113-109)
2VAN2109113
3STL2107111

2 more wins to break franchise record
4 more points to break franchise record

(After games on 4/5/12)

If I make (or made) any mistakes, please correct me and I will edit it.

I really like the fact that this thread can exist in this section for once.

You should put a games remaining counter on there too.

Not that I can't just look it up, but it would be helpful.

Since it's early, I won't be using tiebreakers yet. What I will do to make up for it is automatically give the other team the tiebreaker and make us require one more point to clinch any spot.

President's Trophy: 39 points

1st Place: 34 points
2nd Place: 32 points
3rd Place: 32 points
4th Place: 30 points
5th Place: 29 points
6th Place: 25 points
7th Place: 22 points
8th Place: 17 points to clinch playoff spot

(As of games on 2/29/12)

If I make (or made) any mistakes, please correct me and I will edit it.
For what it's worth, they only need 27 more points to break franchise record for most points in a season. 13 more wins would also break the wins record.
It doesn't mean much, but always cool to set a record for a franchise thats been around for almost a century.

I usually made this thread the past few years . Nice to have one where it's not the fight for 8th place.

Yeah, I remember putting the standings on a dry erase board for the final stretch run each season and for many years we were below the line trying to sneak in. This is a lot more enjoyable. lol

Wow, 90% for first. I didn't know that seeds 4-8 are called wildcards like in football.

so they give us a 20.1% chance of winning the division, pittsburgh 5.7%, philly 3%, nj 0.6% and nyi 0%

what happened to the other 70.6%?

Shouldn't Washington (69 pts in 63 games) be ahead of Winnipeg (70pt in 66 games) on this list. Their top total points is higher than that of Winnipeg, thus we need to equal their top total in points probable to clinch a playoff spot.

Win title % means President's Trophy, not the division.

I think it means Stanley Cup. How could Boston have 5 % chance for the # 1 seed but 21 % to win the President's Trophy?

The magic number to clinch a playoff berth is 19 and Atlantic Division is 29.

Rangers have 19 games remaining. Don't know if that affects your other calculations.

Thanks. It doesn't since on paper it was right but I just copied it over incorrectly.
