The stripes/coloured bands/whatever you wanna call em' on the arms and on the bottom just ruin then IMO.
Plus our current 2011 Winter Classic jerseys already have that stripe-y design. No need to repeat...
if i could photoshop i'd try to show you what i'd change but ill just try to explain it.
I would reduce the area covered by the gold stripes and make it like just one thicker gold stripe that covers much less area. I think the parts on the socks and arms cover too much and make it look weird but I do like the idea of a simpler concept with less angled lines like the current ones. I think the bolts hit the nail on the head with their current jersey. Simpler is better.

I revised the concept jerseys posted above based off some of the reader feedback. I didn't think that the jersey would look great in the old yellow, but I was wrong, it looks incredible.
I also reduced the number of stripes to 3, and removed the laces from the Home sweater.
The first rule of any new jersey has to be to ditch vegas gold for the old school yellow circa '90-'91. The second rule of any new jersey has to be to go back to the '90-'91 set. Black with diagonal PITTSBURGH (from '93) as the third.

These are actually pretty good, I really think the Penguins should go back to the classic yellow as well.
Vegas Gold is okay, but the classic yellow they used for years just looks better with black and white.

yellow and white right next to eachother is never appealing to the eye.. i'd make those little white stripes between the yellow stripes black on the home sweater

Disagree on the diagonal city name, I think it looks like terrible. The Rangers have my least favorite jerseys in the league and I hated when we went with that look on our road unis.
