I was really bored so I recreated the skype logo by hand with Gimp and changed it last minute.
really wasn't hard... blue to white fade background layer, clouds were easy, the hardest part was doing the math for the star on the left and the chat bubble near the middle by hand.
oh well. I have really come to appreciate gimp and the power it posesses.
Edit: I've been practicing a lot with the layers and masks which seems to be the key with Gimp. This was just something I did in an hour trying various curve functions and overlays.
