Flyers 2005 Draft

Does anyone know how many picks we have, and in which rounds? Also, which players would we be looking at with our respective picks?

I believe the Rangers have the Flyers' 2nd from the Malakhov deal.

Bobby Ryan is said to be great friends with the Clarke family, and has been working under Mike Stothers in Owen Sound. It wouldn't surprise me to see them move up to get him.

I wouldn't be surprised, and I'd like the pick.

I understand the part about there being no draft if the season does not happen, but the 2005-eligible players will still be around whenever play begins again. I know the draft order/rules for 2005 players may be different by then, but I'd like to get an idea of what we could be working with.
I hear good things about Bobby Ryan. How is he progressing at Owen Sound?

There has to be a draft first. If there is no season, there is no draft.

Really, really well. He's been easily our best player this year and he makes fans come out of their seats every game. Incrdible strength on the puck , great stickhandler and brilliant passer with good on ice vision. He needs to refine his shot(fans a lot) and his skating is still not great. But apart from that, he's looking great.

I like Ryan too, but this team needs D prospects, not more forwards.

We need a guy who can be a physical presence as well as an offensive contributor from the blueline. Someone who can complement Joni down the road. That being said, guys like that could be had late 1st round or even a bit lower (especially in the case of a 2005 + 2006 super-draft). I like what Bobby Ryan brings to the table both on and off the ice. It's a tough choice, but I think you have to take the best player available. I think our forward corps is a little bit older than our defense, but we have better forward prospects. Ironic since, at the beginning of last season, we pretty much had nothing in the way of forward prospects aside from Carter and Richards (and it wasn't even known how good they could be).
All that being said, the Flyers have a good track record of picks in the 3rd round and later (ie Ruzicka, Pisellini, Beauchemin, etc...) and there's no reason to think the scouting staff couldn't uncover a few more gems in the next draft, whenever it may be.

At least there's a plus to this lockout, the Flyers have room to improve for the next draft. Does anyone recall what happened in the 94 lockout...what with the players that went undrafted and all.

I was just throwing out a bunch of names off the top of my head, I'm sure there are tons of others more deserving of mention than Gino, but it was just a quick mini-list intended to prove a point rather than give specific examples.

They have to have a draft. What if they settle next September, or something. Besides the kids are all playing. It is not like they won't be scouted.

Draft order for the teams might be interesting though. I don't think they can expect everyone to be locked in last year's position if there is no season. Maybe they will have a league wide lottery, or maybe some creative way of weighting it to slightly favor the non playoff teams. A lottery could mean a great pick for us (#1 overall maybe?). It could also mean a bottom pick. If they did a lottery, they would probably run a snake draft.

Bobby Ryan screams Philly! I have him going 9th overall. His skating needs work but the rest of his game is elite IMO.

there is no draft? that is news to me. i allways thought there was a draft in '05 no matter what. it will be weighted as allways with the same rankings used after the '04 season.

To have a draft you need a CBA or a reboot of the would league. i.e. scabs.

I know they will draft these players, but I keep hearing something about a weighted lottery, based on the '03-'04 results. Definitive answer?

If there's one thing that's always in short supply in these lockout times, it's definitive answers.

In a lockout, all teams are to have shut down hockey operations, which means they do nothing.
