Awful Amateur = Amazing Pro?

Looking for players who were below average in the junior leagues and when they got a shot they exploded in the NHL. Best example wins.

Patrick Roy had terrible stats in junior. Credit to Kenny Powders on the Habs board to remind me of it in a recent post

Just reading wiki now, he posted a seasonal GAA over 6 and another over 5.5.

Did any QMJHL goalie have even decent stats pre-00's? Luongo and Brodeur's junior stats are bad too. I think it had more to do with the league than the player, no?

Stephan Lebeau has consecutive seasons of 146, 167 & 188. Does that help?

I don't think anyone ''awful'' at the junior/amateur level can become amazing in the pro but Donald Brashear was a very average junior player. Wasn't producing at a PPG pace in juniors but did in the AHL and while he is mostly remembered as a fighter, he could hold his own playing hockey too.

Both good answers so far.

Datsyuk had more points in his NHL rookie season than he had in any single season in Russia but thats in a pro league playing as an undersized teen so I don't think his improvement was as surprising as Roy's

He was on a terrible team and scoring was crazy high in the Q then.

We've had threads like these before and the best example is Alex Burrows. He didn't make the QMJHL until he was 19 and only had 30 points that year. The next year he had 70 points but 70 points from an overager in the QMJHL is nothing exceptional.

Luongo was a star in Junior, even started for Team Canada at the WJC. Brodeur was also a 1st round pick so while I don't remember him from that time he must have been good.

From all account, Roy was'nt well knowed in the Q, being on a bad team and not seen as a top prospect.

Lucic has to be up there. 19 points in his deaft year, looked like max upside was AHL goon due to lack of skating ability and vision.

They always have very misleading stats.

How about Ryan Jones?

He didn't play major junior.

He didn't played Junior "A"

He was drafted out of Junior "B", by the Minnesota Wild in the 4th round of the 2004 NHL draft after his second season with the Chatham Maroons

Go figure.

If his max upside was AHL goon... why would the Bruins use a 2nd on him?

I remember Lucic being more of a fan favourite than an outstanding player in junior. Actually, I'd say his pro career is pretty similar to his time in Vancouver. His jump from the WHL to the NHL would sort of be like the equivalent of him winning the Hart next season.

Jr. B in Southwesten Ontario is pretty close to Jr. A in most places elsewhere because there is no Jr. A here. Jones decided to go to college and wanted to stay home and play junior instead of going to Toronto or the States. Had a pretty good college career, playing Jr. B was not indicative of his skill level.
