Blues, Sharks looking for offense
Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

LAST 10: St. Louis 6-4-0; San Jose 3-6-1

Season Series: The Blues are looking for the season sweep of the Sharks. They won the first three meetings, all in regulation, including a pair of shutouts in St. Louis and a 4-2 win at HP Pavilion in San Jose on Oct. 15.

Big Story: Both teams are in the playoff race but are coming off shutout losses Thursday. The Blues were blanked 2-0 in Vancouver, while the Sharks lost 1-0 at home to Buffalo. The Blues are battling the Red Wings for first in the Central Division and enter the weekend three points behind the Canucks for first in the Western Conference. The Sharks hit the weekend two points behind the Coyotes for first in the Pacific Division, but just three points out of ninth place in the Western Conference.

Team Scope:

Blues: They had their four-game winning streak snapped at Rogers Arena on Thursday as the Canucks scored twice in the third period, including an empty-net goal by Chris Higgins. Brian Elliott made 22 saves, but suffered his third straight loss. He's only given up seven goals in those three defeats.

Elliott said after the game in Vancouver that the Blues were looking at it as a measuring-stick game.

"We didn't measure up," he said.

Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said his team ran out of gas in the third period as the Canucks kept coming up at them. It was the second of back-to-back road games for the Blues, who won in Edmonton on Wednesday.

Sharks: San Jose ran into Ryan Miller on Thursday and the Sabres' goalie got the better of them, making 39 saves for his second shutout in as many nights. The Sharks also managed only one goal in a 1-0 win against Philadelphia on Tuesday.

All told, the Sharks have scored only 15 goals in their last eight games. They're 2-6-0 in that span.

Sharks captain Joe Thornton said the problem Thursday only partly was Miller's creation.

"Miller's a world-class goalie, and whatever he sees he usually stops," Thornton told the San Jose Mercury News, "but I don't think we had enough traffic in front of him."

Who's Hot: It's hard to say in this case as neither team scored a goal Thursday. However, Sharks goalie Antti Niemi has stopped 44 of 45 shots in back-to-back starts since getting pulled after giving up three goals on seven shots in less than 16 minutes against Nashville last weekend. And, Blues center Andy McDonald had 4 points in the three games prior to the 2-0 loss to Vancouver.

Injury Report: The Blues still are missing Alexander Steen (concussion), Matt D'Agostini (concussion), Kris Russell (concussion), and Jamie Langenbrunner (broken foot). … The Sharks are dealing with a slew of injuries, including coach Todd McLellan, who sat out the last two games while dealing with concussion symptoms after taking a stick to the head last Sunday. Martin Havlat is skating, but remains out with a hamstring injury. Douglas Murray is dealing with a fractured Adam's apple and Logan Couture has missed two straight games with a lower-body injury.

Stat Pack: The Blues were shut out on Thursday for the first time since Dec. 31. In between that 3-0 loss to Detroit on New Year's Eve and the 2-0 loss to Vancouver this week, the Blues had seven shutout victories.

Puck Drop: "We only gave up one goal in two games and you should have two wins in that case," Sharks forward Ryane Clowe told the San Jose Mercury News. "If we play like this, we'll probably win 1-0 and 2-1 and that's how we're going to have to win."

Per Accuscore
The San Jose Sharks are slight 50.7 percent favorites over the St. Louis Blues. The Sharks are favored by AccuScore simulations partly because they have a +7 edge in shots on goal and are projected for 34 shots on goal vs 27 shots for the Blues. The Sharks goalie(s) have the edge in save percentage at 90.4% compared to the Blues goalie(s) who have a forecasted save percentage of 92.4%.

KEY PLAYER STATISTICAL DATA
SAVES: Jaroslav Halak 32, Antti Niemi 24
SHOTS: David Backes 2.7, Joe Pavelski 3.3
GOALS: Andy McDonald 0.37, Patrick Marleau 0.42
PTS: Andy McDonald has a 44% chance of scoring at least 1 point and Patrick Marleau has a 20% chance of 1+PTs

Well we have a huge advantage in that the refs hate the Sharks. Pietrangelo's exceptional game against them last time can be attributed largely to stanchions. When he stanchions them like that there's really nothing they can do. You can see the thought bubble appear over his head: "I'll use a stanchion!" and then it's over because the ref moves in and makes bad ice.

Hopefully we can season sweep Excuseville USA.

They have started playing defense since they got back home and I'm sure they're charged up to play in this one. Thank god we have all the built in edges.

Well since this is in San Jose, I'm expecting nothing less than exceptional ice.

Ah yes, the 4th meeting between the Sharks and Blues. But actually this should only be considered the 2nd. Those games in St. Louis really don't count because the ice conditions were too bad for the Sharks to play on and only the Blues were able to complete any passes. The only games that count are the ones in California, where there's REAL ice. We all know that state is known for hockey and its perfect ice conditions!

It's true that there is a secret group of Blues fans. We don't acknowledge our existence (except in this thread). It is our job to sneak into the Scottrade with shovels and chop up the ice before all NHL games.

Also please don't let it get out there about how all the refs in the NHL refuse to call penalties on San Jose's opposing team. Another well kept secret.

Here's to a Blues win, and some great whine coming from California.

I'm torn

The responsible poster in me wants to say lets be respectful and just stay away from the sharks fans board given what happened last time

The troll in me wants go to their thread and post "is your ice always this bad?" 30 seconds into the game.

BTW if the hockey gods have a sense of humor we will win 1-0 tonight with the only goal coming off a 5-3 PP. Sharks fans would lose their minds.

I'm just ready for these late games to get over with...This one should be a good game. I'm guessing the Blues win 5-1.

Curious about why the stats show Blues against Northwest division instead of Pacific.
Even though Blues are 3 for 3 on the Sharks, I'm not "expecting" a win, but certainly hopeful for one. Sharks haven't been great as of late, but you never know, they are probably due for a win. Would love to see the Blues wrap up this road trip on a high note.
Definitely ready to get back to earlier scheduled games as well.

Last game with San Jose things got unruly. Some posters who were around then...aren't on the site any more. This is my obligatory reminder:

Don't troll the Sharks GDT on their page.
Don't engage in trolls on this GDT.
If you think someone has violated site rules, please simply tag the post for review.
Don't complain if/when you receive infractions for ignoring the above.

MOD Note

Since last time went so poorly, its time for a reminder to follow the site rules and refrain from posting on the Sharks GDT unless you can be respectful.

Now that the mod hat is off, I am stoked about this game and the razzing going on is pretty funny.

A lot of nice info and quotes here. Niemi is 28, not 31, though. His number is 31.

Since the Sharks have played back to back riveting 1-0 games, they're ripe for a team to come in and be all boring. Come on boys, use that clutch and grab!

I don't think anyone is saying the Sharks won't be a tough test, more so just poking fun of Sharks fans from the last time we played them.
