Altanta native dropping in. During the Thrasher's last season Zach was the wipping boy for the majority of the team's defensive failures. Being a 3rd overall pick he had high expectations and after 3 years fans were starting to feel he was a bust.
Looking at his numbers this years it appears his defensive play is still a work in progress but I was surprised by his high assists output.
How is he coming along? Is he still playing like a 4th forward?
BTW, congrats on the huge win Friday. A lot of people down here are pulling for a Peg playoff run.

Bogosian's +/- is very misleading. He has actually developed into the Jets shut down defenseman, and is primarily up against other teams top lines. I think his assist total is just the tip of the iceberg if he was ever put into a more offensive role. Compared to what we heard about Bogo in the past, his development this year is nothing short of amazing. Universally considered one of the Jets untouchables.
No longer is he a whipping boy. He is right up there with the fan fovourites.

A lot of his assists are from slap shots from the point that are rebounds, or from a great breakout pass. He's much much better defensively as well, his numbers are lying at how much better he is defensively this year than last.
I honestly really had my doubts about bogo coming into the pre-season/reg season. I had seen him play only a handful of games with Atlanta and was not impressed. Looking at his stats in Atlanta I was horrified. What kind of a player was coming to Wpg etc.
Now after watching him play a ton of games I have to say he is a great dman. Directs a great deal of shots at the net and is very responsible defensively
. I think that also Huddy has helped his progression as well.
Overall very safisfied with his progression and man is he a stud for us out there. I can only envision more positives to come as he matures.
I won't break much down, other than to say his develop as a 21 year old has been phenomenal this year and he has been nothing short of superb as a professional since his arrival during training camp.
Considering how many posts he's hit, his goal totals would also be better with a little luck.
Too true, it's like the puck has an electromagnet in it that gets activated when he touches the puck. Worst luck with clanging it on the team, eventually those will start to go in for him on a more regular basis.
His turn-around this year has been a big story both on these boards, and in the media. There's a good article here from as early as November, and I'd say he's just continued to flourish since then:
Huddy's obviously been a great fit for Bogo, and has really gotten his defensive game settled down. That seems to be the focus for him this season. The turning point seemed to be the point where we had Enstrom and Hainsey out for awhile -- Bogosian had to step up to take some huge minutes (at one point he was logging close to 30 minutes a night), and he handled that just so easily.
Really exciting player, is obviously getting his game back on track. I bet next season his offensive numbers start to take off, too, as it all gets put together.
Yeah, Bogosian is a great young player, but I what I really want to say is: GO PREDS GO! GO PREDS GO! GO PREDS GO! Tonight we move one step closer to first place!!!
A lot of people here would say that he has been the Jets best defenseman this year and I believe he still has tremendous upside beyond that. He can be mean down low and Stuart's game seems to have rubbed off on him a bit in that regard. If he could learn to step up on guys at the blueline more, he'd be a physical force.
I'm confident his offensive game will come around once he's more comfortable in his own zone. We've seen him go on a few end to end rushes this year but for the most part he seems to be playing it safe, which is what the team needs (with Byfuglien and Enstrom providing enough offense from the back end). He may not have the offensive zone instincts of Byfuglien but with his ability to rush the puck and his huge shot from the point, he could come close to his production. 40 points would be a good target for him in the coming years, along with shutdown defensive play.
Funny thing is, Bogosian was pretty good as an 18 year old...
I've been curious about this. Bogosian was a stud his last year of junior and carried this into his rookie season. But then has 2 years where he regresses. A regression when someone is in their 30's suggests skill decline (hey it happens to us all). But a regression at age 19 & 20 suggests a mental/psychological bases. Yet it appears that the finger was pointed solely at Bogosian for this.

Loss of confidence is what I've said all along and I still think that was the case. If you watch highlights of the past two years, he just looks very timid like he doesn't want to make a mistake and he was over-thinking things. Passivity in front of the net is what stands out most to me, not laziness but just really not moving, not tying up sticks, etc. You can basically choose any game in the first half of last year and it's obvious. He got better over the second half of the season and has just continued to improve this year.
You have to remember that, because of his injuries, the first half of last year was basically the end of his second full season if you go by games played. He was still learning at the NHL level and injury setbacks, coach problems, etc I'm sure didn't make that learning curve any easier.

I posted this on another thread yesterday so I hope my Bro's don't mind a cut and paste job:
I think the boys have summed it up well and maybe I can add a bit of history to the posts if you are interested. Last year in Atlanta many of the fans seemed to be at their wits end with Zach and he had a terrible season where he was not even on speaking terms with his Defensive coach. This summer as we were gathering information on our roster one thing that jumped out at me was when Chevy was such an open backer of Bogosian and to Gump's post Chevy did mention that they would be building the D around Zach in the future. It took awhile to get his contract done and there were some B level rumors that he didn't want to play here but once the deal was signed I think most of us were looking forward to seeing his talent. Guerzy did a nice job of defending him and selling him to our fan base (well to me for sure). The move worked out well for Zach and he got what he probably needed the most in a fresh start with Charlie Huddy as his D coach. Charlie has a reputation as very good guy and a smart coach and his style meshed perfectly with Bogos. They spent allot of time breaking down each shift on video after games and by all reports they have a close bond almost like friends. Zach's dad was quoted in the Free Press early in the year saying "Zach will do anything for you if you have his back....he is a very loyal guy"! My guess is that it was a much better style fit. On top of this fresh start and new coach both Toby and Hainsey went down with injuries early in the season and Zach was thrust into the lead role. I remember a few of us saying this could be the silver lining when the injuries took place. Bogo started logging huge minutes and the confidence the coach's showed in him coupled with the mentoring and direction from Huddy seemed to drive Zach's confidence which drove his results. Huddy and the team really focused on his defense and worked on keeping things simple and playing to his strengths. The end result is that the Winnipeg fans didn't have to suffer through the lean years and what some of us see is a 21 year old with allot of upside. He is a very mobile, physical, shut down D man, with a high will to win and compete, and natural leadership skills. Early on Mark Scheifele referenced Bogosian and Ladd as the two guys he looked up to that reached out to him. As this season has progressed Zack's O game has also sharpened up a bit and at times he has led rushes (but not as often as most of us would like). His shot has really improved and he seems to be able to move very well laterally at the point to open up his shooting lanes and also has improved his shot by keeping it lower and varying the pace to make it more tip in and rebound friendly. Also on occasion he will direct the shot off the end boards for a planned rebound to the front of the net and that has proven to be affective at times. Being behind a guy like Buff on the power play has limited his development a bit in this category but I believe it is just a lagging indicator for now. He is on a .40 ppg clip this year and that is only going to get better as time goes on.
Most of the early comparisons with Zach this year on our board were with Doughty (some nice inner heated debate) but I think that is because of their age and the fact they were 2nd and 3rd overall in the same draft......from a style perspective Shea Weber was possibly a more accurate prototype and was also used a bit here. However my favorite comp so far was on CBC on a Saturday afternoon Ron Maclean compared him to a bigger version of Chris Chelios and I think that is possibly the best comp that I have heard. Maclean mentioned they both have that relaxed skating style where they can reach high top end speeds while making it look so easy and they both look like they could be on the ice all game. Also they both have similar shots from the point. Chelios broke onto the Habs roster when he was coming up on his 22nd birthday which would represent next season's age for Bogo.
I have been a big Fan of Zach's since day 1 and it started out mostly because I really liked the guy from his interviews but the big moment for me early on against Pittsburgh he did that insane rush where he went coast to coast at top end through the Pens team by himself and hit the cross bar on a hard shot. from that day on I was sold. To see that live was something that just sets you back in your seat, I will never forget the crowd reaction and ovation. Also yea for sure it doesn't hurt that he is a small town boy that can laugh at himself and his fit with our city is a match made in heaven both ways.
From what I have seen this year from this 21 year old I am extremely optimistic. If you look at guys like Weber or Pronger they really didn't get going until they were around 22 so I think Bogosian is positioned well to be an elite Defenseman in the NHL for a long time to come. could he be Norris level one day? who knows but I for one will not cap his potential yet because it’s away too soon. people would have laughed at you if you would have said a 21 year old Chris Pronger, Rob Blake, or Chris Chelios would one day win the Norris.
As a side note one the Jets I have met mentioned that Zach is a freak as far as fitness goes and in all the preseason testing they do for V02 max etc Bogo is in a league of his own. This story matched up with another friend mentioning he knows the guy who does this type of testing and he was blown away by some of Zach's results and he does this testing for olympic level athletes.
Zack probably won't peak for 2 to 3 seasons and its going to be a fun ride
so long story "LONGER" I think Chevy was right and we will be building our D around Bogosian for years to come. Zach is living up being picked 3rd overall in his draft class!!
Wasnt there some issue with the d coach and Bogo in ATL, like they didn't speak the whole year? That'd be a bit of a hindrance to his progression early in his career. Coach Huddy seems to be really connecting with him, he'll be a monster in a couple years.

There was a mention of that in a Free Press article earlier in the year.
He's not longer a train wreck in his own zone. He's not flawless but he's reliable for the most part. He could also have 10+ goals on the season if he didn't hit so many posts. I'm happy with his season, as is every Jets fan.
WINNIPEG -- Defenceman Zach Bogosian left practice early today at the MTS Centre, having aggravated a previous injury, coach Claude Noel said.
Bogosian just returned on Thursday night against Florida after missing seven games with a wrist injury.
Noel said Bogosian tweaked something -- he was unclear as to exactly what -- during that game and couldn't make it all the way through today's workout.
Bogosian is likely to be held out of Sunday's practice as well.
"A game-time decision" is what's in Bogosian's future, specifically for Monday's home contest against the Buffalo Sabres.
The Jets, with 70 points, remain eighth in the Eastern Conference. They have 16 games to play.

this really sucks.....based on that article it seems like the Wrists have plagued Bogo all the way back to his junior days. Hope he isn't forced to miss the Buffalo game I expect them to be really tough to beat on Monday
