10 years 45 mill, not even joking. He has a great attitude, he is a good kid, he one of the few player I Think a team should want to sign long term. He has all the attributes of that type of player.
It is so funny to hear all this one year stuff. He is a character guy. Will he ever be a great 1st line C? no, but he could be a great long term piece. He is skilled, we aren't talking about horcoff here.
$4.5 million cap hit for 10 years?

Why not? If I am looking at this team there are four players I would all sign to 10+ year deals. Ebs, Gags, Hall, and Nuge. Like Malkin and Crosby in pitts, Toews and Kane in Chicago, you get those and you move pieces around them.
I think the smart money locks him up longterm. 5yrs @4M/ and maybe some of that frontloaded means we retain Gagner into our contender time frame at a marketable price and that would fit within our need to tie up our ELC's in a couple of years.
Minimally he's a topsix center that can put up pts and play a wide range of roles and be of benefit anywhere from line 1, to 3, to PP.
Improving enormously on the dot and has made Horcoff expendable.
For all the talk of Gagner "inconsistency" this is a pretty safe bet player in terms of production/yr, and what he will bring to the table going forward.
I actually disagree. I'm actually a pretty big Gagner supporter, but while I feel that he's done more than enough to secure an extension, I don't believe that he's done enough to secure a long-term extension.
Personally, I'd rather have him sign a 2 year deal with maybe a bit higher cap charge than having him sign a longer-term, higher-value extension. With a shorter contract extension, he either flops out (IMO, unlikely - but still a possibility) and his contract is done in two years, he plays to his contract (no problems there) or he outperforms his contract (earns more money, but if he's earned it, who cares?).
Either way, unless a young, top 4 d-man is coming back, I'm hoping Gagner is on the squad next year.

We just look at it differently is all. I still see Gagner as a clear level below those other 3 and I'm not sure that he's a long term guy here or not TBH.

You'd put Gagner is the same group and Malkin, Crosby, Toews and Kane??

Not long enough!
Seriously though. 4 Years, 14-15 mil. Dont know if hed sign.
He's painfully close to making me think id give him 4 mil a season.

I agree, we look at it differnt. I don't see Gagner at that level either, but we have to realize Ebs, Hall, and Nuge will all comand 7 mill or more. I hope some how they take discounts at 6 mill or more. So it isn't like I am saying pay Gagner the same.

Yes, Yes I would, in a sense. To me long term players are not always super stars, they are players that have great attitudes and fit the mold of your team. I see Gagner in that way. I mention those player but there are also guys like James Neal (signed long term), Sharp, ect. not per say super stars but guys that teams felt are part of the future long term. The best comparison I think is JVR in philly, signed for 6 years at 4 mill. Not a super star, but a core player in phillies eyes.

If we're going to offer him some stupidly long deal, I wouldn't go over 2.5. 15 years, 37.5 million. Any takers?

Umm..what? He isn't a core player. He hasn't lived up to the hype and his name is always floating around trade talks for a top defender, which Philly needs way more than they need JVR. Carter and Richards were "core" players too and look what happened to them lol.
I'd give Gagner 3.5x2 to prove his worth. He had an 8 point game and that's great and all but he's not consistent enough and is often completely invisible for long stretches, which also hurts the productivity of his linemates.

even without his 8 point game he'd be on pace for about a 45 point season. And that's including his stretch of games at the start where he was getting back to being game ready. He's proven plenty. He's also proven he'll work his *** off to improve his weaknesses and he'll do anything to help the team win. He's earned a 4-5 year deal. The only thing with him is whether or not we move him to help our defense

That will take him out of his RFA years.... not sure I can get on board with any 2 year contract regardless of value.
Pay him 4 mil for 1 year than re-evaluate, or pay him 3.5-3.8 for 4 years and then at least we get some UFA years out of him.
I don't think Gagner is worth 4M...and even if he was, I don't think it's a smart idea to give the 5th or 6th best player in your top 6 that kind of money.

Well sure whatever, just saying I would sing Gags to a simliar contract. The Flyers must think he is part of the future, I assume they thought hat about Carter and Richards, who knows what changed.
Draft Grigorenko and trade his snow covered pants for whatever you can get.
That might be the best option. I wouldn't be as negative about it but if we draft Grigorenko...Gagner has been replaced. I don't like him as a winger.
I do believe Gagner is a decent 2nd line center that still has it in him to be a good 2nd line center...but I don't know if he's a fit going forward just based on the type of players we already have in the top 6.

This is madness right here, you want to offer him a long term 5yr $20mil deal based on what? He hasn't been good enough to be considered a core player plus with the kids needing to be re-signed in the next 1-2 years, giving $4 mil/yr long term to a questionable 2nd line player is brutal.
I would agree that Gagner has improved this season but he's still maddingly inconsistent who hasn't even eclipsed 50 pts yet while being put in prime roles to put up points, you can't give a lucrative long term contract to a player like that.
Hell, Tavares only makes $1.5 mil/yr more than that and he's much much better than Gagner.
This would also set a bad market for the kids' contracts.
I would offer him a shorter term 2 year contract for reasonable dollars, a Hemskyesque contract if you will to evalutate whether or not he will either improve enough to be a core contributor or to trade him to fill areas of other needs when we have a viable replacement for him.
NO long term deal for him, the very thought is ridiculous.

June 22nd could be a pretty exciting day. Maybe not as exciting as drafting RNH/Klefbom and then bring Smyth back to town...but still a pretty good day.
Word on the street is we are trading for one, maybe even two top dmen this summer. Speculation is that our draft pick will be part of the package going the other way.

There are very few Dmen that I'd trade that pick for and I don't know how many of them would be willing to come here if they had the choice....and as we've seen with Jeff Carter and a few others. Even when a star player doesn't have a NMC, they can still get their way "at the end of the day".
If Weber was to come to town, he better want to be here.

If we are trading the first overall pick I want Tambo FIRED!.
