THN's Top 50 NHLers as voted by the players - Jason Spezza #39

This seems about right. Spezza is having a great year but there are many players that are underachieving or injured this year that are better players. ie. Crosby and Ovechkin.

Discuss.

Spezza sucks. Trade him.

Kessel at 16. Hockey players are so dumb.

I'm honestly curious to see who is ahead of him, 39 is too low.

EDIT: Kessel at 16. LOL, i'm done.

I think the injuries Spezza suffered the last few years has dropped his "stock" amongst non-sens fans and hockey "experts".

If he remained relatively healthy then I think he'd be in the majority of peoples top 20 players.

Ah, makes more sense. However, even with the injures he has always been a PPG player.

That shouldn't lower his value. Hemsky got 5 million a year based on what he did when he was healthy.

i think it's low. I'd have him ~25.

the whole poll is stupid though... they asked players to name the top 5 (FIVE!) players in the league, and somehow turned that into a top 50 list. Most of the guys from 20-onwards probably got only one or two votes.

Spezza's rank is lower because he was injured in the past but others are ranked higher because they are injured/underachieving this year?

In the last 3 years, Spezza has spent 1 year as a top player in the league.

Keep that in mind before you complain. Gotta understand the players come from a different perspective

Ovechkin has already hit his prime and is now only showing up to pick up a paycheck. Crosby will be dealing with concussion issues for the rest of his career. For this year, Spezza is way better than them and dare I say will continue to be better in the future.

They vote him most easy to intimidate, then vote him number 16. Every Leaf player must have voted for him.

So is this the 50 best NHL players right now? or the best 50 NHL players in the last 2,3,4,5 years? Guess I should read the story. Link please?

I don't think injuries have very much to do with it but rather that Spezza does not play a 200' game. I think he has the reputation of being a very good offensive player but not so good defensive player although he continues to improve in this area.

I don't really agree with this either, we are not that far removed from the days Heatley, Spezza & Alfredsson were tearing up the NHL on the way to the Cup finals. I think as I mentioned above, it's due more to his reputation of not playing very hard defensively, being an easy player to play against.

I was at the Chicago game the other night & caught Spezza on several occassions basket hanging, waiting for the break away pass at centre rather than helping his teammates defend in our zone. I think this pisses players off on your own team & the other team as well. It's one of the reasons we like players like Datzuk, Zetterberg, Forsberg & Crosby, they play a 200' game. Spezza has done more of it this yr but seems like it's an after thought to him most of the time. It's the reason why I have a hard time picturing him as Captain because I don't think he has the work ethic to motivate his teammates like Alfredsson does.

Wait...so Kessel is better than Karlsson AND Spezza? LOL.

I dont think you would find a GM in the league who would let either go for Kessel.

As was already said though, this is beyond a flawed way to do this. They asked for the top 5 players in the league, then made a top 50 list. Without some encouragement from the people asking the question, I doubt you would even get 50 different names.

But you should also think, or at least hope to think, that your average joe hockey player can name at least 1 good player for each team... I mean, I can...

Spezza should be higher, though I can understand why he isn't. Kessel at 16 is just ridiculous though. Good player, but shouldn't be in the top 30, let alone the top 20.

Been a while since he's been seen in a very positive light is what I'm saying. If he keeps doing what he's doing he'll keep rising.

They have Toews ahead of Ovechkin, Lidstrom Malkin and other less notables (both Sedins, Chara, Weber)...

I wouldn't be too worried.

Edit: and in case you missed THN February edition of prospects, we're ranked 5th overall and Zibanejad is 5th of 50 prospects.

I think Spezza's game has really matured this year, his decision making with the puck has really improved while still allowing him at the proper times to take the risks that make him Spezza.

Seems only a short while ago Murray was getting blasted for suggesting Spezza was hurt by Sens fans booing him. I cant remember the last time i heard sens fans do their classic Spezza drop pass groan now.

As usual, Spez takes the criticism, says nothing, deals with it, and makes his critics eat crow.

Im still not sure we've built the perfect first line for Spezza yet though, like if Nash were on it or something.

They didn't say Spezza wsa worse than those two, more people voted Kesel into their top 5. Replace Kessel and hockey players with favourite sodas, same thing. OMG THEY VOTED FOR PEPSI INSTEAD OF COKE. It's not personal or anything.
We are going to be underrated until we win a Stanley Cup.
