Why don't the hawks just say Toews has a concussion?
The way ALL NHL injuries are reported (upper or lower body bs) is bogus to be sure but if Pittsburgh can say Crosby and Letang have concussions what is the difference here? I just don't get it.

Because in Hockey, when you have a wrist injury, and everyone knows you have a wrist injury, when you get back on the ice again, the first thing opposing teams would to do try is to take a whack at your wrists to re-injure them.
I totally get why teams try to protect their players by not disclosing injuries, even when they are somewhat obvious. The fact is, as fans and the media, we don't NEED to know...

This. Because assuming Jon is back for the game against the canucks, they will slam his head into the board if they were to know he has a concussion.
Because it is not the NFL. There is so much gambling in Vegas on NFL games that they have to disclose injuries to specific areas. Then they have game time decision, probable and unlikely categories.
I like the NHL style better. Upper body or lower body it shouldn't be other teams or the medias business.

I almost added this to my reply as well, and it is just as valid. The NFL has to reveal such injuries do to all the gambling pressure in Vegas, bookies, etc. Not just with betting on the outcome of games, but fantasy football, and tons of other ways millions of people gamble on an NFL game every weekend. All the revenue associated with gambling forced a shift in what gets reported for player injuries over the years.
The NHL hasn't yet risen to that level of popularity with respect to gambling. If it does, I think you would see a change in the NHL as well. I hope it doesn't get there. I like the way the NHL does things as it is.

And you don't think this is true in football? Sorry, I can't buy it.
Football is a little different than Hockey in respect to games played and the injuries. Most of the NFL injury report is muscle strains. Some of it is garbage. Brady was on the injury report for three years straight.
It seems like other players are stepping up to fill the gap (as best as one can expect), so I hope the organization gives him the rest he needs so it's not a chronic issue as with Crosby.
Toews wants the play and the Blackhawks want their players to play. Coming out and talking about a concussion is not condusive to that at all in todays climate. Maybe it wouldn't hurt but it certainly wouldn't help so why go ahead and do it? They are doing the right thing to handle it between the team, team doctors and Toews and when they decide he is ready to come back, he'll be back.
ST. LOUIS -- Jonathan Toews had a good off-ice workout in Chicago today, coach Joel Quenneville said, and he's hopeful that the Blackhawks captain can take the ice soon.
Toews has gone through his off-ice workouts back home as the Blackhawks have continued on this three-game road trip. Asked when Toews could be back on the ice, Quenneville said, "I can’t give you an ideal date, but today was encouraging."
Asked if the car accident Toews had in late February had an affect, Quenneville said, "I don’t think it has anything to do with where we’re at."
Meanwhile, Niklas Hjalmarsson is getting better but Quenneville said the defenseman is out for tomorrow night's game against the St. Louis Blues. Ray Emery will get the start in net tomorrow night.
How on earth did he get a concussion? I didnt see any big hits on him and I have watched all the games...
It read it suggested that it was against Sharks of Feb. 10 even though he played the next 5 games or so. There was certainly no one big hit, so potentially it is just cumulative on top of others he has already had.
Maybe it's not a concussion after all, because Hjarmmalsson is listed as out with a "concussion".
Actually, I've been hoping this. Maybe it was his wrist, or shoulder, or some other part of his upper body that caused a problem, and he tried to play through it. People assumed concussion, and maybe the Hawks don't want to disagree. Let other teams think the wrong thing.
Either way, I hope he's fully healed before he returns.

There was a play in that game where Toews fell to the ice backwards and awkwardly. He looked like he was favoring his shoulder after but I think he also hit his head on the ice during that play.
Toews was knocked all over the place in that game.
