- retain Koivu and Selanne cheaper and in 3rd line role, less minutes, easier matchups etc. Koivu is then available for PK duties. this is assuming Bonino continues/ picks up his play too!!
- sign a 4th line centre (Konopka)
- Hope that Lydman Bounces back, and can mentor either Schultz or Vatanen (with the aim of one or them replacing Viz when the time comes)
- Trade Cogliano to free up his salary. He isnt the answer now or for the future! as much as I like the guy
Etem/DSP - Getzlaf - Perry
Ryan - Bonino/ Trade - Palmieri/ signing
Hagman/ Belesky - Koivu - Selanne
Belesky/ Hagman - Pelly/ signing or trade -Parros/ heavy hitter!
I know I'll get flamed for saying this, but I hope Teemu and Koivu don't return. Our team depends way too much on them. I'd rather see us rebuild by calling up Etem, Holland, vatanen, Palmeri and so on
I don't necessarily want to get rid of Koivu and Selanne, but we need some new blood on the 2nd line. Koivu really shouldn't be there, but he might be OK on the 3rd line.

why would we want two top centers that hit iron more than the back of the net?

If this experiment doesn't work in the first half of the season we can shake up the roster at the trade deadline and the 2013 draft.
That roster will be competing for a lottery pick. Murray is not going to waste the last years on Getzlaf and Perry's contracts at the bottom of the standings, not if he wants any chance at re-signing them.
That has us at 45.42 mill with 2 spots left to fill. I would like to see us go after someone like a David Jones for the 3rd line spot. But i see Bob Murray going after guys like Penner and Hagman to fill those 2 spots.
Let me re-word Pauls sentence then. If Cogs and Koivu are on the 2nd line expect a worse year than this one.
Lydman needs to go. He's our #5 at best and you can argue Brookbank has been better recently. We cant have a guy playing medicocre making 3m as a #5/6.
As far as the 2nd line goes. We need a legit 2nd line C, not Koivu. Unless Holland is up to the task then we need to sign someone. Pair him with Ryan and I say we plug the holes with some rookies. I wouldnt mind seeing how DSP could do in the top 6.
I honestly don't believe that the ducks can compete in the free agency with the current budget. We will be out bid by teams like vancouver/red wings who basically recycle talent from the free agency each year. If we want to get better, we will probably need to trade. With teemu/koivu/blake retiring, I dont see us competing for 2nd line players in the free agency. I am afraid we will probably be subject to mediocre players on our 2nd line for at least 2 more seasons. If Etem/Holland/Palmieri pan out to be what is expected of them, we could have a really good 2nd line right there.
As for defense, I was first for trading lubo/toni. However, think about what we have coming in the future. If we trade them now, we will most likely have to pair them with draft picks (like lubo-2nd rnd pick) to get any real upgrades. Upgrades that will most likely be gone in a few seasons to make room for schultz/vatanen/clark/any other defenseman that surprises.
This team is vastly under rated, but Ill take it. If teams want to believe we dont have a good group of young guys, suit themselves. Most teams have one or two good prospects at a time, we have much more than that here.
We dont need to pair Lydman with a pick for an upgrade. Just trade him and let a rookie take his spot on an ELC. Id rather keep brookbank and its prob time to give a rookie the #6/7 spots.

Lydman being paired with Schultz wouldn't really be a bad thing on that bottom pairing. Brookbank is never consistant with being just okay so I would be careful with a Brookbank-Rookie pairing.

True. But still, we dont need that much spent on a 5-6. We cant afford to upgrade the 2nd line because we're on a budget but we can afford 3m on the bottom pairing? Who knows, that extra couple mil might make the diff between an avg 2nd line center and an above avg one.

Yeah but I want to see what is going on with Teemu/Saku/Blake etc. That will really help see what our second line could be like.

You really think that's a Cup contending team? Two rookies and Ryan on our 2nd line? You've basically got the same team, minus Blake and Selanne, with two rookies in their spot, and then adding Doan.
Someone explain to me why all these rosters put Etem on the first or second line and leave Palmieri in the AHL when Palmieri is scoring goals against men at the same rate that Etem is scoring goals against 16 year olds?

Palmieri just turned 21. Clearly the fact he's not in the NHL yet means he's a bust...
As for Lydman, I disagree with the majority who want to move him. He may be playing third pairing minutes at even strength but he's our 2nd best PKer and is always sent out if we're trying to protect a lead at the end of the third. Defensively we get a lot weaker without him. The fact that Fowler and Sbisa are earning about $3M between them should allow us to pay Lydman the $3M he's easily worth.

Because potential is greater than genuine accomplishment at the pro level.

10-11 Lydman was easily worth 3 mil. Not this year.
With that line of thinking Etem and Palmieri will never sniff an NHL career.
I'd tell you that I was being facetious, but I'd still be at a loss to explain your response either way, since the AHL is a pro hockey league and the WHL is a developmental league.
