This just has the potential for things to get real ugly.
That offseason will be insane anyway .... Giroux, Schenn, Couturier and Read will all need new contracts, if they are still around.

The cap is suppose to go up in the short term. However, with the new cba, owners are rumored to want to take the players' share of revenues from 57% down to closer to 50% like the NBA and NFL just got. So the cap is projected to go up to 69 mil (possibly 72 with the players' escalator option) until the new cba is signed. If the owners get their way, the new cap at 50% would actual be a little over 60 mil. I doubt they will get all way down to 50% will I do think the cut will be lowered, still leaving the Flyers with cap concerns.

No. JVR makes over 4 mil next year and has value on the trade market. Who else on the flyers has a big salary and can be used to acquire a good cheap defenseman? The only other one is Hartnell and I doubt that he will be moved after the year he has had and the greater locker room role he has taken up this year.

You'd have to calculate from the midpoint, not the upper limit. Based on a $70MM upper limit, the midpoint would be $62MM which means NHL revenue had been roughly $3.26 billion. The midpoint using 50% would be $54.4MM and the upper limit $62.4MM.

They may widen the gap between lower and upper limit to reflect the original proportion after the lockout ($16MM gap and $39MM upper limit)

I think this thread might have become a tad more relevant after that game.

Gus over MAB and Paulsson is done IMO, avoid. I think we have got to go after a better top 6 two way forward as well...IF we are in a win next year mode.

Building for the future...no problem keeping 90% of the current forward group.

I think the Flyers will have to get younger and more mobile on the back end. That will require a forward or two to be moved to acquired the cheap talent needed on the back end. Plus I would like the Flyers to rehire Terry Murray to coach the defensemen.

I like the draft too but your talking 3-4 years before any dman not named Ryan Murray makes it to the Flyers. The Flyers need talented mobile defensemen next year.

Hmmm... I just thought of something, I know we really should keep our 1st, but for some reason, I'd kill to trade for Oshie. He can put up good points and smash bodies.

I would like Chris Stewart from St Louis as I think he would excel in playing in Philly.

We really don't need a young scoring forward, we are pretty heavy there.

We really need someone to play defense from the forward position.

That's where Prust comes in. He plays on the PK and can hit and fight and can put up the occasional point.

Oshie's my favorite player in the league. Be ready to pay up though...like more than a 1st. Might be JvR+ tbh

No. He's waaaaaaaaay out of touch with the current NHL.

I know we should really keep JVR in the system, but if it meant Oshie... then damn...

Even though we might have the best overall top 9 or so in the NHL, we NEED energy players. Actual agitators that can play.

Just perusing the FA list for this offseason and wanted to offer my initial thoughts. The pool of defensemen to choose from is pretty underwhelming, but I think going after Alexander Sulzer would be a shrewd move on Homer's part. He'll be 28 at the end of the month and played really well for the Sabres, where he was given top-4 minutes, after coming over in the Cody Hodgson trade. I was at the Caps/Sabres game in DC at the end of March and Sulzer's play caught my eye; he didn't record any points, but he moved the puck well, made sound defensive plays, was physical... everything. Checking Sulzer's stats, he put up good offensive numbers in the minors. For that reason I don't think his 3 goals and 5 assists in 15 games for the Sabres was a fluke, but more an indication that he's just starting to scratch the surface of what he can do in the NHL. Intriguing player with plenty of room for continued improvement. I also wouldn't mind taking a look at Filip Kuba, but he turns 36 next season, is coming off a great year, and will likely command a contract worth at least a $5M AAV.

As for the forwards on the market, I see plenty that I think would help this team. Among those at the top of my wish list: David Jones (big fan), Paul Gaustad, Jarret Stoll, Chris Kelly, Daniel Winnik, Tanner Glass. Sleeper: Scott Parse (put up 11 goals and 13 assists in 59 games for the Kings in '09-10 but has played in just 14 games the past two seasons due to hip injuries).

Thoughts? Comments? Criticisms?

Honestly, if we get Suter, we have all the players we really need for defense. Timonen, Suter, Mez, Coburn, Grossmann, MAB and our 7th can be Lilja. I mean, I'd add Sulzer for depth, but I don't want him wasting away in the AHL.
