Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever seen an actual number attached to tagging space discussions?
I don't question the fact that they're likely riding close to the limit, but you never know if management actually knows what they're talking about given some of their past blunders.

I want to calculate it but it's a bit of a daunting task since there's very little information out there and even the CBA leaves a bit up to interpretation.

Let Jagr walk and find a replacement for Kubina. Preferably a very good one since Pronger is likely done. That's all I ask for.

I love Jagr by the way, I just don't think his point production next season or his endurance level will be anywhere near worth what he made this season or what he will likely make next season.

How the Forward Corps should stack up

OK, here is what I think, for what it's worth. I think there are six forwards that we need to retain, to build three top lines around.

<I purposefully exclude the 4th line cuz ...everyone talks about rolling 4 lines, but no one does it. Go see every Cup winner for a decade and look at their 4th line. No stars. In this league no one can aford a great 4th line; an adequate 4th line is good enough.>

I know many of you will say.. wait a minute, three lines needs 9 forwards, not six. Has rban forgotten how to count?

I believe that if you have two really good forwards on a line, the third forward can be decent but not necessarily great. So rather than have three lines with nine stars (which is unaffordable), build three solid lines that will last many years and that revolve around 6 forwards signed long term.

The remaining three forwards can be a rotating cast of characters: keep someone until he gets cocky and asks for too much cash, then let him walk.

So I think the forward corps for the long term should be:

Most experienced veterans: Hartnell and Giroux
Some experience and youth, good upside: Simmonds and Voracek
Very young, but great upside for future: Coutourier and Schenn

Jagr can retire, he is old. Briere can stay next yr, but after that his 7 mil/yr contract expires and he'll be very old and expendable.

Talbot and Read are great pieces. They can be the third forwards on the top three, until they either become injured, too old, or ask for too much money: then they can walk. Briere can also be the third forward on one of those three lines until after next yr.

How does this sound? Six forwards locked in for the long term, supplemented by the Reads, Talbots, and Rinaldos of the world.

Suter/weber or bust.

We need to grab a guy who can be a legitimate #1 defenseman, or I'm afraid next season is going to be more of the same

Yeah, it seems pretty crazy to me. I think several prominent individuals in Nashville's org would need to begin eating lead by the fistful right now to become crazy enough for that to happen.

Yeah, that'll never happen.

It'd be like LA adding two young centers in the off season and at the deadline

If the cap goes up to 69M and we have a bonus cushion, this is a pretty conservative roster that we could have. That would be a great team IMO, considering that most of our young guys will be better next year than they were this year, esp. Schenn, who seemed to get a lot better at the end of the year. That's considering Pronger is on LTIR.

guys.. i dont see us landing suter.. with lidstrom retiring today, i think detroit has the most money and the best shot... when they lose a piece they usually do something about it rather quickly.. i.e. schneider out, rafalski in quite a while back

Would you want to be the person who has to follow in the footsteps of a top 5 defenseman ever?

With next years salary cap estimated to be somewhere around a possible 10 mil raise, it opens up a lot of new options.

I'd speculate, but who knows what the Flyers organization would do with that kind of cap space.

It's up to Suter, actually. Maybe he prefers the Flyers? Who knows. Yes, it's speculation, and many teams consider getting him, but we try to figure out some ways it could work, what would we have to give in order to get him, etc. If we don't, we need another plan, sure.

77,753,500-66,973,335=10,780,165

The first number is the new expected cap with the 5% escalator from the NHLPA with the 3.3 billion dollar revenue, plus the 10% overage they get for the off season cap. The second number is the Flyers off season cap number they begin with. The third is the amount of cap space they have. They have room to sign a big name player (Suter Please please please) and a 4th line center and maybe another role player with out trading anyone. I still think the Flyers will make a move though through trade to sure up their defense if we don't land Suter.

Thanks to jfb for doing all the calculations on the cap numbers their. In this thread and the other one. I learned a ton about the CBA this year, and now they will re-do it so I must learn all over again!!!
