I wonder if other Miami NHLers who knew Burke's son (Ryan Jones, Alec Martinez) will support this

Really? I'd rank the NBA last. And I'm doing that for no other reason than the fact that 76% of the league is black, and they're more inclined to be religious.

edit: scratch that, they'd be ahead of NASCAR.

I think considering the way the league has handled homophobic slurs (fining Kobe Bryant) and the number of homosexual players that have come out, it is better than the NHL, at least. That's all I'm basing it on.

And for a quick addendum, it was Tim Hardaway, not Penny.

So much respect for Burke stepping up and standing for something he believes in in a jock sport. And so much respect for the players who signed it. I have a feeling once one guy comes out, more will. I predict that the first few openly gay players would incite awkwardness in the dressing room (shower? Changing?). But I do think a lot of players will step up and support their teammates and friends, considering that's a big part of the game on ice. For all we know, with all the intimate locker room talk, a few players may have come out to team mates, but have kept it closed from the media.

its a shame this thread had to be closed and then moved from nhl general talk, but i guess it's the way it has to be. kids continue to kill themselves over this, and STILL the ********** continue to speak out against gay people.

as it stands, there's likely dozens of nhlers that are gay. but, with that said, it is probably down from the national average... i mean, competitive team sports simply isn't inviting to gay people.

anyone who's spent time around sports knows that virtually every joke is a gay joke, and the F word is used endlessly. i dunno about anyone else, but if i want to have a coffee with a black person, i wont be inviting him by using the N word.

every small step is a step, and every step forward is important. so this is one more important, albeit small, step forward... if only it didn't require thousands upon thousands of these steps.. but, it does.

To clarify, again, this thread was never posted in the general NHL forum. It was originally posted in this forum because if it was posted in the regular forum, it almost certainly would have been moved within a couple of pages.

There was another thread in the main NHL board but it was shut down due to rampant stupidity/bigotry/homophobia by the alpha male part of HF, though I suspect with their bravado, there are more than a few closet cases among them. In case they're reading: it's OK to be Takei, guys.

I was about to go full flame mode on some idiots on the main board, thankfully I got saved a ban by whoever closed the thread.

Nothing wrong with homosexuals. It's a real shame there is so much bigotry out there. I didn't know it was 1960. It's 2012!

Actually, I believe it's one of the Phoenix executives that just came out...And the league was pretty tolerant of that.

African Americans have been overwhelmingly progressive for the last forever. Admittedly, this may have a larger correlation with social programs, but I would suspect that things such as homosexuality would get a better reception in basketball than people think.

When gay marriage was voted on in California, whites were against it 51-49. Blacks were against it 70-30.

False. Blacks were against it 60-40, and after factoring out religious affiliation, there was no discernible difference between them and other demographics.

John Amaechi coming out after his career ended showed an ugly, nasty side of NBA bigotry.

I'd argue that.

LeBron only talked about trust factors in keeping it hidden. Somewhat ignorant in the issue, but I don't think necessarily mean-spirited.

Hunter and Randolph said they'd be okay with it as long as there were no romantic advancements on them. I can't honestly say I'd say any different if I were on a gay men's hockey team and we let a women on.

In short, I think there's a difference between lack of education and understanding and bigotry. Hardaway was bigoted in his comments, the other three were just ignorant and loud-mouthed.

Funny you choose the word bigot. Check the etymology- it means "by God".

It's a lost cause spending energy making the world accept something so unnatural and foreign to our biology as homosexuality. It's never going to happen in the NHL, local communities, or the earth, because it makes no sense. You're fighting the flow of electricity, yin and yang, the positive and negative that charges the entire universe. Opposites attract, remember?

It doesn't take a history professor to sight that homosexuality is outlawed by almost all world cultures and especially religions. Buddism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Seik, etc. Should I go ahead and name every known religion? Or nation for that matter? It is just a basic human law, like not having sex with a parent. There are two groups who did practice hs openly and with children: The Greeks and Romans! Two doomed civilizations that eroded in immorality and strife. Sadly their influence still has a strong bearing on our (western) culture today.

To argue for the "rights" of those that practice anal and oral sex and use plastic toys for pleasure and form a political movement because of it is ridiculous. And you call it a lifestyle? How does that compare to true human rights, to not be judged by race, sex, or religion? It's a mockery. I have compassion for drug addicts, thieves, even murders. They are ill. But thy don't create a flag and banner and get up in your face in every quarter of popular culture to demand your respect and congratulations for their UNHEALTHY behavior.

Why do I care what other people do? Because I love life and people and we have to share this planet. Homosexuality is an effect of the imbalances in society and nature right now. There is so much inequality and suffering, so many disturbances to the "field." Economically. Physically. Spiritually. Mentally. Why can't men and women love each other in this time? Every single person I've met who is "gay" is not healthy or balanced. These are ones who need attention and therapy to find who they are and what their purpose is. We stray so far from nature and the simple truths. We will be the ones to change the world and pass down knowledge and wisdom to the next generations. We have to approach our problems with honesty to find solutions and move on.

My teaching is that as a man if you don't have the attraction to females then just hold your meditation and stay clean. Native Americans have traditions where those who were not the family type were put into positions of healing and counseling as "shamans." I am saying if your gifted by not being so average chemically why indulge in useless carnal activity that is deemed a "mortal sin" by so many of our elders? Stay clean and let's go for a skate, man!

What makes you think it's unnatural and foreign, and what makes you think that's a legitimate argument to reject it?

Norse mythology, Greek mythology and Roman mythology all support homosexuality. They are religions, and people do still follow them. Hinduism also supports it in certain circles.

There's legitimate biological reason to outlaw incestual sex. There isn't any to outlaw homosexuality.

Heh. Actually, both eroded into immorality and strife after Christianity took over the world in the dark ages.

And are you suggesting you want a theocracy?

As if those are the defining characteristics of homosexuality and limited to only that.

No, it's a biological reality. Homosexuality is almost certainly somewhat genetically based.

Any evidence to prove it's "unhealthy"?

Define "healthy" or "balanced".

I bet it's not that you've never met anyone who is gay that is not healthy or balanced, it's that, in your mind, anyone that is gay is not healthy and balanced because they're gay and no other reason.

Homosexuality is natural. And what the hell does "purpose" have to do with any of this?

My teaching is that, if it's your natural inclination, and no one's getting legitimately hurt by it, ignore those who wish to control and just go with it. You'll more likely be happy if you do.

All those random capital H's are unnerving to me. Must be unnatural. We must outlaw it because the world will never accept it. Most of the languages in the world don't allow it, and those that did are no longer around. Don't give into making capital H's, even if it feels right to you. You must ignore your dirty inclinations and stay clean!
