Banning words I am not a fan of though. Sometimes, you can call someone a *** and not mean it in a derogatory term toward homosexuals. See the South Park episode and the Louis CK bit. When I call someone a *** its not "you are gay" it has become "youre a ******". We are too afraid to offend today. You call me a muff diver, I call you a butt pirate, we both go home with who we choose, thats a truly equal society.

While a funny clip, Louis actually discusses that bit with a gay comedian on his show (Louis, the TV show). And he seemed apologetic for it. Yeah, he means no harm, but calling someone a "fa***ot", is a term that carries a lot of historical hate. That term originates from an old english term for a bundle of sticks. When burning witches, they would sometimes run out of kindling sticks, and throw in homosexuals, thus being "fa**ots", or kindling. Every single homosexual in the world has been called that term in a hateful way more than once in their lives. Sure a lot brush it off, or even embrace their lifestyle, but to say that you're too afraid of offending anyone is denying the fact that there are so many homosexuals who had to deal with that being put down for something they can not change (basically on the same level as calling blacks "n******").
So whether you like it or not, the harmless way we call people "f*gs" still stems from centuries of homophobia. And even if you aren't directly offending anyone, the connotations of the word (in my opinion, at least) are enough reason to cut the usage of the word out completely, if only to show solidarity to the LGBTQ community.
