Lowe named GM of WHC team

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=389549

He'll be assisted by a group that includes Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland, Edmonton Oilers president Kevin Lowe, St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong and Hockey Canada staffers Bob Nicholson and Brad Pascall.

Lowe has also been put in charge of Canada's entry at the upcoming IIHF World Hockey Championship in Helsinki.

Not a shock that he gets to help out the Olympic team, but kinda shocked he is going to be the main guy at the WHC.

The kids and Gagner all need to be on that team.

I don't know why everyone hates Lowe so much, he bought high on some key components of a Finals team. That same team he built with some excellent trades. It was a mistake we all bought into. Good Oilers got bad deals, but nothing was clearly too crippiling as it wasn't all that hard to find cap space. Tambellini has ****ed us not Lowe.

Good for him great Oiler, and before things went a little downhill here in Edmonton a guy who was very well respected as an NHL executive. I think this is great news for Oiler fans and means we could see guys like Hall, Hopkins, Eberle, Gagner, Dubnyk?, Smyth?, Schultz? don the Red & White.

Where's the hate?

I'm just shocked that they aren't going with a Messier or someone trying to become a GM.

.
Lowe had all the pieces in place for caused our plummet to the bottom. Bad scouting, no decent development system, poor talent in the system, overpaid burnt out veterans. There was no place to go but down and it was a very convenient time for Lowe to jump ship and allow his replacement to take the heat.

The one bad thing about Lowe as GM is he leaks trade info to the media. Under tambo, there has not been any leaks on the oilers side of the trades. (This is evidenced by the Smyth trade, especially, and the fact that the oilers were the ones to announce the gilbert-schultz trade before any media outlets.)

I think it was fairly common knowledge that it was Lowe who leaked the proposed heatley trade. We would've all been better off had we not known anything about it at all.

That said, Lowe is a good guy to have around, with certain connections around the league.

That means Horcoff and Smyth are a lock for the team.

I think you've got that wrong actually. Tambo had to come in and fix the ****show that Lowe left him with. Personally, i'd give Tambo a C+/B- type grade for what he's done so far.

Well not that they are bad picks as they could fill a role on the team, but I don't really want Smyth going. He can barely handle the NHL season let alone play extra games.

Messier was the GM last year, and he did a pretty terrible job.

It was just a name I threw out. I'm kinda shocked that Lowe would want to do it at this point in his career, unless he's seriously thinking of getting back in the game as a GM.

Hall, RNH, Eberle are probably locks for the team. Smyth and Gagner have a decent chance as well.

couldn't agree more. Tambo has actually made some very good moves. If he does what he says and addresses the defensive need this summer, I have no problem with the job he's done.

Anyways though, Lowe should do just fine with Team Canada

Obviously this will be subject on whether or not the Oilers are in the playoffs this year.

This is his warm up before taking over for Tambellini.

Tambo still doesn't have a contract for next year right? Great time for Lowe to get some "practice"

edit: also want to add, he better not put Reimer as one of the goalies. My guess is Price
