OT loss for Toronto would suffice.

You could make a pretty list for many teams and you'll find that the teams who let the most UFAs walk generally are playoff teams whether they are 1st or 8th because generally(there are exceptions) teams in playoffs and who strive to make the playoffs(yes yes mediocrity blah blah) won't trade their better UFAs who the reason why the teams are in a playoff position.

Yes you can go an say "the habs should have just moved them because they were mediocre and finishing 6th is useless because you won't win the cup", but unfortunately, it doesn't work that way because almost any owner would prefer playoffs over no playoffs and if pending UFAs are the reason you are in the playoffs, chances are they won't be traded.

Yup, it's that simple...

people can whine all they want, but teams dont trade their players when they're in the PO or still fighting for a spot. There's a few exceptions, but that's all they are - exceptions.

Losing Lupul for 3-4 weeks is going to hurt their playoff chances immensely, they might even give us tank issues.

Another year, another failure. Atleast I have that to be happy with.

Blatant goalie interference by Bozak was ignored by the refs.

Other than the 3 kids and Gagner (whose only 22 btw) up front, and Smid and 2nd year player Jeff Petry on the back end, the rest of the line up is pretty much dead weight. I know a lot of you guys want to rebuild, but its not fun, or easy with the terrible management we have.
You know what isn't fun? 9th place, Jacques Martin hockey and trading your best defensive prospect for gomez. You don't know the meaning of suffering you get to watch Eberle, Hall and RNH. Only now is Pacioretty getting good and our forward core getting exciting.

I will take a couple years of tanking over 20 years of mediocrity.

Forget the UFA's if you don't like the whining since it's smart business to lose assets for nothing because other teams do it (Yea, Detroit never resigns their vets and loses them all for nothing). Here are player dumps by the team and their returns.

Latendresse -> Benoit Pouliot -> nothing (left as untendered RFA)
SK -> Dan Ellis & Dustin Boyd -> nothing (Ellis never signed & Boyd left for Europe after 1 season)
AK -> 2nd round pick 2013 (TBD) & return of Habs' 2012 5th round pick (TBD)
Grabovski -> Greg Pateryn (prospect)
O'Byrne -> Michal Bournival (prospect)
D'Agostini -> Aaron Palushaj
McDonagh -> Scott Gomez, Michael Busto (left untendered), Tom Pyatt (left as UFA)
Ribeiro -> Janne Niinimaa, 5th round pick 2007 (Andrew Conboy)
Lapierre -> Brett Festerling (left untendered)
Higgins - Gomez
Wisniewski -> 5th round pick 2012

No whining, just the facts. In the real world, a manager who ****s up more often than not isn't around to advise after he quits.

Isn't trading Andrei for an asset precisely the opposite of what was whined about earlier that the habs don't get anything for UFAs they don't keep?

Why would the habs have traded Wisniewski last year when they were 3 points out of 1st place in the division in MARCH?

I agree with Sergei, McDonaugh, Ribiero, Lapierre...Higgins I'm always on the fence, I liked him a lot, but by the end of his time here, I didn't really care...but this is completely different from a team not trading their UFAs when their goal was to make the playoffs regardless of whether the fans agreed or not that they should make the playoffs.

I can't believe some in here are condoning losing all those assets over the years for nothing. LOL. it's not like the Habs ever had a great amount of depth so I'm not sure why they continuously let so many assets walk for nothing.

Habs are probably the best team at throwing away assets for nothing.

well, in the real world... pretty much every GM lose player(s) for nothing... pretty much every year...

you can keep whining, oraccept the FACT there is so much trading teams can do on dead line day (or days prior) AND that players right are rarely traded for...

Wow, Gord Miller just said something interesting.

There are only 6 active players in the NHL who have played a playoff game with Toronto.

He was a 20 years old rookie in the AHL the last time the Leafs made it.

Lord that was long ago

Kaberle was 25 haha

EDIT : The 2003-04 Leafs were such an old man club... 18 players over 31 including 9 over 34!

By real world, I meant the real world... not the NHL. I removed the UFAs for the list. But you're still whining about them. Those are players that were traded and the return they got.
