This should be the get out of jail card for anyone who thinks he can't be good here / should be traded / is no better than Martin in terms of team fit.

May 9, 2012 - Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek underwent hip surgery on Wednesday. There had been no indication from the club that Michalek was playing injured at the end of the season or in their first round series against the Philadelphia Flyers. Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette tweeted the news, via @EmptyNetters:

The operation was performed by Dr. Thomas Byrd in Nashville and the procedure was reportedly successful. According to Josh Yohe, the team indicated that Michalek should be ready for the start of the 2012-13 season in the fall.

Michalek played in 62 games during the 2011-12 season, scoring two goals and tallying 11 assists playing for Dan Bylsma on the blue line.

It also means he likely won't have much time to train or condition as he recovers over the summer and his effectiveness next season could be limited. A surgery like this also reduces the viability of trading him if management wanted to.

At least he didn't have it towards the end of July like Orpik and his abdomen surgery.

That really depends on how long he is going to be in recovery. Most players dont start training until July to give their body a rest and to recover from their bumps and bruises they got during the year. If hes close to working out by then it should only marginally effect his training.

I'm willing to give Z a pass for this season just because he 1) wasn't outright horrible like Martin 2) had to play with Martin making him look poor 3) was obviously injured or at least bothered by something 4) has a cool name.

It's early May. He'll be fine IMO. 100% ready to go, no excuses.
