St Louis got the best defenseman in the deal, Pietrangelo.
Erik Johnson reminds me of Dustin Brown in his manorisms. Nice guy with a goofy grin, but just not enough fire in his heart to be a true elite player.
St. Louis wins. #1 team in the league folks.
Lmao...he dove head first into the boards tonight...missed the entire 2nd period and came back for the third while we were getting dominated with Shane O'Brien leading the d-corps.

In what universe has EJ been anything less than damn good this year? Much less average at best?
I get that he's been great the last couple of months, but his reads leave a lot to be desired for me. Let's just say I'm super impressed with Shattenkirk defensively and I think if he got the tougher minutes he would still shine. I apologize if you find anything I'm saying here inflammatory, that's not my intention and nor did I vote on who "won" the trade.
In addition, I've found Stewart to be a lazy pile of poo from the time of the trade through to right now and have wanted all year to come and ***** to you guys on the Avs board about him because I knew you'd understand.

Wish all Blues fans would realize what the Avs fans said about Stewie at the time of the deal. When he wants to play, he's a top 20 player in the league and a potential 40 goal power forward.

His commitment is just come and go, big time.
All we knew about Stewart at the time of the trade was that he scored about 8000 goals against the Blues.

He is starting to show more effort and drive on the ice, but his production is still crap, but hey Johnson was similar when he was here.
Technically St. Louis wins considering where they're ranked in the standings. Still, I doubt they're any lower if they swap out Shattenkirk and Stewart for McClement and Johnson.

I'll admit I'm biased so I won't vote, plus I haven't seen enough of EJ this year to comment. That said, Shattenkirk has been so important to the Blues' success this year that I find it hard to imagine they'd be at the top of the standings with EJ. On the other hand, Stewart has been atrocious and Colorado seems to like what they have in EJ. Looks like a trade that is working out for both teams. I don't know why in the world of HF someone always has to "win" a trade.
Bottom line, St. Louis is a better team with Shattenkirk and Colorado is a better team with EJ. Looks like both teams won.
Johnson was the first overall pick, the highest drafted d-man since the lockout.Considering johnson has never come close to performing at the level of other first overall picks since the lockout, and has never had the confidence in himself to perform at that level, i would say st.louis won for cutting their losses b4 his value dropped any further

That's pretty faulty logic considering Erik Johnson is a quality defenseman, even if he has been outshined by former teammate Alex Pietrangelo.

Im just coming from the perspective that 1st overall pick have the quality of crosby, stamkos, tavares, not saying ej is bad or gonna be, but he has never lived up to the potential of MOST 1st overall picks, and thats what st. louis needed him to be, i hope he proves me wrong and has a career like pronger, but i dont see that happening

At the start of the season I'd agree with you as EJ was really trying to do too much and making ugly, costly mistakes by trying to force things that weren't there, ergo his oft-referenced awful early season +/- which was tainted by how terrible the avs where with the goalie withdrawn, but also reflected just how often the mistakes he would make where ones that burned the Avs.
But that was then, now his decision making has been really good for a serious chunk of time and it's gotten steadily better as he's gotten more comfortable. A progression which started when the C was given to Hejduk and EJ simplified his game. The kid's not making big mistakes anymore and he's been phenomenal in every way in his own end, his timing when he uses his body to seperate player from puck has been amazing, his strength to win battles down low and come out of the muck with the puck on his stick has been great but when unable to get out clean he's been very smart at changing to get the puck out of danger. Offensively he's not putting up numbers, but he's been a very effective player, who's been crucial to our transition game with both his passing and skating. His shot hasn't ended up in the back of the net to often but he's getting guys to hesitate when going to block it and often gets it through to the goalie for rebounds, even though guys aren't getting infront of it for tip ins. Although with the beef the Avs have added up front that's not something I'm worried about once the refs decide to start giving the Avs PPs, cause right now the players are still too surprised for the first minute of the Powerplay and don't actually start doing anything until the second half of the PP.
I've seen enough of Shattenkirk and EJ this year to know that Shattenkirk is better.
When Avs fan say EJ is better, they're still factoring in their hopeful bias that EJ will realize the expectations associated with being a #1 overall. Give it another year and they'll be upset with his stagnant development just as Blues fans got to be.

Except that's not what's happened. He was making crucial mistakes early on in the season when he was trying to do too much, but that's changed and for most of the season at this point he hasn't been making those mistakes, is playing very intelligently and well in his own zone, and is steadily improving as he goes longer and longer between bad reads, is able to dominate for longer periods of time and is able to maintain a high level of play even when he's not been pissed off and gone into monster mode. Moving forward, the biggest question for EJ will be what the avs can do to fill out their top 4 since they don't have anyone who's first pairing material other than Erik.
Shatty's a more cerebral player at this point in their careers, and that intelligence and feel for the game are why I loved him so damn much when he was an Av, but their ages are similar and that faster learning curve is offset, at least to some degree, by just how much more EJ is capable of. He is anchoring a D right now and doing so well, not great, but he doesn't have the best support and doesn't have a partner who really compliments his game very well.
imo, if this trade did not go down last year, the avs would not be fighting for a playoff spot this year, not even close. that trade made both teams better giving them both what they needed. good hockey trade for both teams. win- win.
I don't think either team would hesitate to make this trade again.
Shattenkirk has been great for the Blues, and a perfect secondary compliment to Pietrangelo, who anchors the top pairing. He's been a real nice fit for them. Stewart is a talented guy who is capable of getting hot, but he has motivation issues and that's a reason why the Avs were willing to move him. The Blues saw last year what he can do when he does get hot, but it's also apparent he is in no way a power forward that some people think/thought he was.
The Avs needed an anchor and they got that in EJ. You could make an argument that he's the only legitimate top 4 defenseman on the Avs, and on a lot of nights he's the only defenseman who can move the puck. His partners this year have included Jan Hejda, Shane O'Brien, Ryan Wilson, Kyle Quincey, and now Matt Hunwick. I don't think anyone would want those guys playing on their top pairing, and yet from December on, EJ has been terrific. Get this guy a legitimate partner and he'll bust out.
And Jay McClement's value in the deal cannot be overlooked. It is no coincidence at all that Ryan O'Reilly busted out offensively as soon as Jay McClement came to Colorado and took over a lot of his defensive responsibilities. He needs to be a priority for the Avs to re-sign this summer.
Both teams are happy, and when this thread inevitably pops up in a month again, the answer will be the same.
