Thought this deserved its own thread -- big news for a kid who was derailed by injury. It looks like, given Devine's comments, that he won't be back next year.

He just could never break into the lineup, and not just because he played poorly we just have too many defensemen in Rochester. As easy as it sounded to send Morrisonn down it, it has taken away ice time from the prospects. He has played the entire year at the top pairing with mainly three guys.
Morrisonn had been paired early in the season with Finley whose emergence also cost Schiestel, remember Finley came to the preseason camp without a contract and has played well enough to get recalled.
Morrisonn's other D partners have been Breenan and McNabb, who have both eclipsed Schiestel as well.
So our top 4 spots were already taken and that left:
Schiestel
Biega
Crawford
Persson
To battle for bottom 6 minutes and Drew lost the competition. So they tried him at forward and it didn't go well. The Texas Stars are in last place, so its not like he will be playing in the playoffs and he will be a restricted free agent this summer. Its probably the last we have seen from him.
That if they loan someone out, they likely won't be back.
Quote:
One unwritten organizational rule the Sabres probably will continue to follow: not to loan a player who is under contract for next season. “If he’s back with your team the next year, it’s kind of an awkward situation,” Devine said.

Of the defensemen, four will be restricted free agents next season (meaning their entry level deals expire after this season): T.J. Brennan, Drew Schiestel, Alex Biega and Dennis Persson.
There would very likely be interest from other AHL teams on all four. Brennan obviously isn’t going anywhere. I can see any of the other three being moved if a scoring forward — or mean power forward — could be obtained.
don't understand why we would keep morrison , who obviously isn't in the future plans and let go a player of 22 years old that was an all star last year? Why wouldn't we just put morrison on waivers?

Awful asset management. Couldn't Darcy have traded him for anything? Seeing this just gets me angry at Regier for drafting 8 million defenseman and leaving our system completely bare at center.

we could call Morissonn up in the playoffs without having him go through waivers.

He was, that's how he got to Rochester. If the put him on recall and he's claimed, they're now on the hook for the cap hit of half his remaining salary. Right now he has a cap hit of zero. He's the only veteran defenseman in the group, he has a month left in the organization, no reason to boot him.

They still can. They just assigned him to play in Texas, they didn't give him to Dallas.
It really doesn't make much sense still. Morrison wouldn't have to clear waivers durin gthe playoffs? What are we afraid of, somebody will claim him? They said he has no future with buffalo, yet we give up on a younger guy to let him play? I have watched alot of rochester games, he might be top pairing, but he isn't head and shoulders above anyone

He's on their top pair, he's been one of their best defensemen all year. This is about the Amerks having their best player right now and moving an asset who's not playing out.

Fair enough I guess. It certainly doesn't help your strength in negotiating though when another team knows you won't bring a guy back because you've loaned him to another team(This is assuming what Devine said holds true to Schiestel).
