If we waived Gomez I'd assume nobody would claim him. But if we put him on Re-entry waivers would there be anybody that might take a chance on claiming him at a 50% less cap hit?
Also, Do you think it is a possibility for next season to do this?
I know there are lots of threads on sending him to the AHL, sorry to be repetitive.

It wouldn't be "stupid" but it would be cheap of Molson to do, would rather just have him pay the other $5 million in actual salary and send him to the minors or Alaska or anywhere to get off this team.

No. It's better to wait out the year and hope there's a clause in place with the new CBA (like there was last time around), allowing us to buy him out, whithout taking a cap hit for it. If not, I'd say buy him out anyways. Cap hit would be less than a re-entry claim

Not gonna happen.
I see one of 2 scenarios happening.
1-he gets traded for another bad contract(see Campbell trade) and that player ends up in the AHL
2-Gomez get waived and either gets picked(slim chance) or spends the year in a lower league.

yes, he cost 10M over 2 years to bury, but if the team then spends the freed up cap space, the owner is looking at spending up to 24M$ over the 2 years (or 10-12M$/season).
no necessity of the team to spend up to the cap, of course, but in that case an argument could be made to simply keep him on the roster as a 4th liner. No point in burying him in the minors if it's not to then be proactive with the cap space opened up.
*I had a Ryan-Crosby-Hossa line in the playoffs. Was pretty slick to say the least.
Now back to reality I think the only way Crosby isn't resigned by the Pens is if his health problems are even worse than anticipated. If he's FA next year I hope the Habs throw the millions to sign him and waive/trade whoever is necessary to make this possible.
I doubt that he would even get any interest on re-entry waivers.
Even at three and a half he's overpaid.
1/3 of the teams in the NHL look at salary and don't care about cap hit since they only spend to the floor. I can guarantee Gomez would find a taker on re-entry waivers, I don't see it as a smart move for the Habs though.
Even from a financial standpoint it's better to bury Gomez and use his cap hit on a good player(or players) that will get us back in the playoffs, bringing in much more than the 5.5 mil he makes next year.
2.5 mil average for a potential 2nd line center? Yah, teams would take that. Hell, we say we want the whole caphit free. For what? Are we contenders?
Nashville has a ton of capspace and they are competitive. Our ability to spend to the cap is a bonus, but if we can't be competitive when we're not at cap, i'd rather not spend on vet fillers.

folks there is nothing wrong with Gomez
he is in the wrong situation for the wrong team
you put on him on a solid insulated team like Chicago where they might need a second line center he will do well

last year the argument could have easily been made for a slump, or chemistry issue or whatever
now? no. because he has cemented the fact that he is done as a NHL player.

How does it work cap wise if we buy out Gomez? Habs paid 75% left owing to him and spread cap hit over 4 years..a 1.875 cap hit each year for 4 years, is this right?
If we send him to minors we pay 100% left on his contract but 0 cap hit. Or, if we recall him and Gomez is claimed we pay 3.7 million for 2 years. Are these right?
