I was expecting a link from The Onion when I saw that any team was interested in Gomez.

I don't really believe it either, You'd think that Gomez would be looking to get out of town.

Woa gomer.. wtf bro. At least you would of gotten a "fresh" start there instead of destroying your career further. Hope this is just a rumor.

Didn't we have the exact same thread for the same story a couple of days ago before it got locked?

Moreover, it was Incarcerated Bob that first stated that Gomez turned down a trade to the NYI on July 1st. He said the Habs were trying to dump salary to make room for Brad Richards. Incarcerated Bob has some NYI sources so he's probably what spurred this article. So if you want to believe this story it'll depend on how credible you find Incarcerated Bob.

I hope Gauthier informed him thats basically what his decision came to.

I'm really curious to know what the return was supposed to be from the Isles. Anything substantial or a 7th rounder conditional on Gomez scoring a goal next year?

No idea how much of this article is fantasy but.....yes, Gauthier would be praised for this deal.

Let's not forget though, that Gauthier is the reason why the Habs have this albatross around their neck. So, if he finds a taker, great. But it does not stop me from wanting Gauthier out.

Habs fans logic.

Gauthier is responible for Gainey's moves. Gainey is now responisble for Gauthier's moves. k

Dave Stubbs asked Gomez about it

Dave Stubbs ‏ @habsinsideout1
As for #Habs Gomez killing a trade to Islanders, as per a media report? Gomez tells me "I never heard of any deal"

I don't believe this story, but I'm so sick of Dave Stubbs going straight to the players asking them retarded questions thinking they would really admit anything to him.

He's just asking the question the readers are asking.

Why play for a terrible team like the Islanders, when you can play for the 15th place Canadiens.

This was a rumour during the summer, that is why MTL made a bid for Brad Richards, I believe it was rumoured that Josh Bailey would be going to MTL for Gomez there was also of a rumour of a deal in place PG had that would have sent Gomez to Phx for Jovo at last year trade deadline, but Jovo got hurt.

Certainly isn't Edmonton. We have no chance to outtank them. They have years of practice at it

Who was head of pro scouting during the year Gomez was acquired? Who lived in the NYC area during that period.

Gauthier.

Who was GM? Who didn't consult his amateur scout?

Who was the owner? Who didn't bother inquiring if this highly paid fellow was worth something?

I doubt this ongoing rumour is true...

if it were, then Gomez would have been shipped to the AHL asap by any GM with common sense or ballz.

either Gainey didn't rely on his Director of Pro scouting for input on trading for/signing NHL players... in which case Gauthier was just a figure head in a suit (seems unlikely given that Gainey endorsed Gauthier as his replacement).

Or Gainey did rely on his Director of Pro scouting for input, and either Gauthier suggested/supported going after Gomez, or didn't make a strong enough case against getting Gomez.

Any way you want to frame it, Gauthier comes away from that mess with dirt on his hands... wether it be guilt by association or not, he was part of the management team (a big part) that made that blunder happen.

Sending Gomez to the AHL is much more of an owners decision than a GM one. Of course Gauthier would want to ship him to Hamilton. The hard part is convincing his employer to spit on $10M.

Molson is probably a good businesman. Good businesmen do NOT waste $10M on sweet phoque all.

Timmins was on that same team, and apparently he was furious that he wasnt consulted despite having a prospect being sent the other way. How can we know that Bob talked to Gauthier? Spin it how you want, the GM makes the final call...under owner approval of course.

Maybe Gainey's plan was to take a dive that season, but the owner/president wouldn't allow it because it was the centennial and what not.

perhaps as a move designed to open up cap space to be used...

but if a GM (at least one that isn't a complete puppet) went to the owner and told him he tried to unload a player that is not part of the teams plan for success, but said player refused the trade, why would the owner stop said GM from shipping the player to the minors...

the player's actions hurt both the team & the owners pocket book.

if anything, I'd imagine the owner would be the one most upset at the player and fully supportive of shipping him away to the minors to ride buses and have the AHL franchise foot the bill for his non-contract expenses.

keeping him in the NHL means not only is he getting paid, but he also benefits from all the expensive perks you're spending on for the benefit of the players.

if the team has any kind of functional management structure, I can't see the owner hesitating for a second to give the ok... just might not allow the GM to go and spend the cap space freed up.
