The Caps best defender? Jesus shiny new toy syndrome strikes again. Right now he'd be #4 for me

With Carlson playing like ass this season, I'd say he's #2 behind Alzner.. Given his physical play, I think a case could be made that if he's not the "best" Dman we have, he'd be the most coveted..

I'm really liking Orlov's play and development. He's protected a bit playing whats likely the 3rd pairing with Wideman...thats not a bad thing for his first year.

All things equal I would prefer him at RD with Hammer.

Next game actually.

He has not struggled at all being on his offside. Wisely turning his back on the attacker and protecting himself and the puck (unlike some others), he is very strong on his forehand and backhand.

You realize several of Wideman's more cringe-worthy plays were cases where he was covering for Orlov, right? I mean let's not pretend there aren't growing pains here.

He has the rare gift of being good ofeensively and on D too. Hope he develops to be WSH's top D-man. I'm actually quite surprised with the play of the Alzner - Carlson pairing in a negative way. Iwould expected them to take over this year.

I know how he plays I've seen every game of his NHL career not sure why your explaining that to me.

Alzner and Green are still ahead of him for now

Green is a better "defender" than Orlov?? lol Is it safe to say you've missed quite a few of "his" games?

I'll let the masses make my case for Orlov>Green, as far as playing "D" is concerned.. Even with his rookie mistakes, he's better positionally and fundamentally, shiney and new or not.. Sorry..

Whether you're right or wrong, the masses (especially on HF ) are a pretty bad way to make a decision.

The masses? You mean the rest of the HFboards that doesn't watch the caps play?

This is exactly how it went with Carlson last year to. Pretty funny actually

I don't think Orlov would look half as good as Green if he had to carry 55 all over the ice

Young players go through the same cycles IMO. Orlov right now IMO, and as strange as it may sound, is playing relaxed hockey. He has exceeded expectations and everyone is pleasantly surprised at his progress. He's also somewhat shielded and his mistakes are acceptable because of his inexperience.

There is always the sophomore slump on the horizon. He'll put more pressure on himself and the opposition will have more respect for the young player. Things will change and that's when he'll have to adapt I guess. Kinda what Carlson is going through right now.

He's not facing the top lines right now at least with any consistency so I don't see him as good as Carlson or Green right now. But I see his potential to be better than either one of those d-men quite frankly. Carlson seems very passive ATM and I don't see Orlov becoming passive.

I'm getting mixed signals though about what side he likes to play on the most. I believe I read he's been mostly a RD but it seems like the Caps are forcing him to LD. Dima said he likes the right much better for his offensive game (one timers).

Yes. Green is easily a better defender than Orlov now.

Love Orlov as a prospect, but his current ability is massively overrated on here.

The question is right now, who is better defensively, Carlson or Green. All aspects of defensive play, not simply play without the puck.

I contend that Green is our best defensive RD. He focused on D last year and quietly did just fine, but the trumpeted *ARL shutdown pairing stole the limelight.

I don't really see the risk or question marks in Orlov's game down low in his own zone or the offensive zone. It's starting the transition game where he largely gets himself into trouble in forcing passes into lanes that aren't there. At least in those instances you can sort of grasp what he's thinking, unlike Carlson and his tendency to fling the puck along the boards rather than make a composed play. For that reason alone Green is probably their most effective defenseman, even if his defensive technique isn't that great.

I would say that Orlov is overall better in the physical areas of defending compared to Green. He's better at using his stick and separating a player from the puck whereas Green has less of a tendency to win one-on-one physical battles if he can't win the race to the puck first. Of course, Orlov is doing these things while being relatively sheltered for the most part so that has to be taken into consideration as well.
