But I was thinking about the Hemsky deal in light of the Grabovski signing.
I think we did pretty well, especially because it was only for 2 years.
the thing that is bugging me is how the media is acting like the Grabovski signing is amazing (because of how there is no talent in this free agency pool), and how Hemsky's signing was horrible.
anyone with their head not in their ass knows hemsky would have gotten at least 5x5 as a free agent, we did get a discount.
However it doesn't necessarily mean the deal is great for us. I expect his production to be closer to this year than 06-08, but at least his contract clears out sooner than later
I think the Hemsky signing was a good deal given the surrounding circumstances. However, I do think that Grabovski signing isn't necessarily a fair comparison. Centres are more valuable, and, Grabovski is trending upwards while Hemsky is potentially trending downwards, or at best, is idling.

If Hemsky could have gotten 25mill as a ufa he would have done it.
If there was that kind of market for Hemsky we would have traded him at the deadline.
In my opinion, Ales Hemsky is a phenomenal supplementary player. Although he led the team in scoring in the 2005-06 season, I really don't remember him being THE catalyst of offense for that team. That was his best offensive output of his career and I'd attribute that to the fact that he played on a successful team.
If this team turns it around over the next few seasons you may see Hemsky's point totals return to form.
Right now, MAYBE. When Hemsky's on, it's not even remotely close
but hemsky hasn't been "on" for years. that's why people laughed at the oilers for the signing. I like the fact it's only two years, but 5 million per year is high for what hemsky's been bringing to the table when he hasn't been injured.

Fixed. It's been part of one season. Give the guy a chance

It's been all of this season, and you have to factor in the previous two seasons.
Injuries do matter. If the guy isn't on the ice, he can't helping the team.
When was the last season he actually was a positive attribute in regards to the Oilers?
I think it was a good deal. Hemsky get a chance to get back to the player he was before, and we don't have to give him away for magic beans. Regardless of what you think of him, he IS a good player. He's having a bad year, but I think he'll come back strong. And that's a trade-able contract when the time comes.

He was injured but he put up almost PPG in the games he played.
He's been our lone force before the kids, funny how everyone forgets. Oiler fans are some of the most biased groups I have ever been a part of.

Exactly. You can't just disregard all the games he DID play simply because he was injured. The guy missed basically a full season. Why is it so crazy to think that, given a bit more time, he could easily return to form?

Thats what I dont get? He's looked good the last 30 games and posters are still complaining. He's not putting up points like he usually does, but hes also not getting as many opportunities as he usually does. Hemsky would have gotten more on the open market, but he wanted to be here. If he didn't want to be here he would have been gone last season when Tambo had a heart to heart with the "vets" to see who wanted to stay around for the rebuild.
Atleast the Oilers were able to salvage the asset. 5 per isn't an impossible contract to move considering he doesn't have a NMC. Losing 83 for nothing would've sent the Oilers into damage control mode again. (Pronger,Comrie etc)

Hopefully Hemsky comes through for us. Because if he continues to trend the way he has, the best thing you'll be able to say about his contract is that "well, it's only for 2 years."
