I've been thinking about his and the only thing i can say for sure is Ron Francis is #1. After that it's a crap shoot. Staal is probably #2, but cases can be made for guys like Dineen, Irbe, Kapanen etc. Soft spots still exist for guys like Grimson, Kastelic, and McKenzie. I also saw Marc Potvin (RIP) get in a fight on the Sabres bench live. that alone might be worth the 10 spot.
don't know who a lot of these people are but i'd have to say
brandon sutter
jeff skinner
ray whitney
erik cole
justin faulk
bryan allen
jussi jokinen
andreas nodle
1) Cam Ward
2) Eric Staal
3) BBC (Brindy, Bataglia, Cole) - yeah I cheated with this 3-fer
4) Ron Francis
5) Glen Wesley
6) Arturs Irbe
7) Justin Williams
8) Ray Whitney
9) Brandon Sutter
10) Mike Commodore (entertainment factor and wonderful memories)
I was just curious as to why some people don't have Eric Staal on their top 10.
He's one of my favorite players, but I don't watch too many Canes games so I rather ask you guys.
i love staal, but for me, it's 2 things:
- unrealistic expectations not delivered every night.
- his effort doesn't seem to always be there.
what's interesting is he really stands out every time he plays in the olympics and is usually one of the best players on the ice for canada game in and game out.
at least two gents brought their best every night, unlike your main man lapose.
1) is it really necessary to include a along with a LaRose joke? It's only the biggest meme on this board.
2) If you're going to slag him, at least do it properly. Effort and compete level aren't exactly his biggest deficiencies, as you may have heard in a press conference or ten.
3) What else do Boulerice and Ulfie have in common? Best known for intentionally injuring opponents... or for getting one-punched. At least Samuelsson was a legit NHL player. Boulerice's greatest achievement was being on the receiving end of the most embarrassing knockout in league history. The guy was a disgrace. Unless you're a blood relative of the guy I really don't see anything to be a fan of.
I don't think any list of favorite players can be "wrong" per se but Tarheel, can I get your true list? I really respect you as a fan and what you do here.

1) Brind'Amour

6) Kapanen
7) Wesley
8) Grimson
9) Harrison
10) Staal
TBH, a whole bunch of guys run together around #9 and #10. Those are the flavor-of-the-week spots.

He seems strangely distant, considering he's the face of the franchise. I like him as a hockey player, but find him kind of a cold fish as a person.
tarheel,
thanks for the input.
a few things though.
just because something is said repeatedly at a press conference doesn't mean it's true. as a working member of the media, i know this fact all too well.
as for my listing of boulerice, walker and ulf on my list. the thing i liked about them when they played was the fact they brought an edge to their game, something sorely lacking on the canes over the past several years, and one reason in my mind they're not going anywhere now or anytime soon.
all the young players they've brought in and drafted are small, waterbug type guys that and have none of the grit and size that intimidate, something that's very much a part of hockey.
it's the reason the bruins won the stanley cup last year. when they decided to impose their will on the canucks, they owed those games.
i don't think anyone could argue that man for man, the canucks have the more skilled and talented team, but the bruins took the series with old time hockey.
let's face it. our stanley cup win was unbelievable and awesome, but we understood the rules coming out of the lockout better than anyone else and took advantage of that fact.
never have i felt a team more deserved its fate than the canes that year and it was amazing.
but it's not happening again in my lifetime and if the canes are still around in 10 years, i'll be surprised.

He'd probably be on more lists if he was not the captain. Many question his drive and effort level. He doesn't seem to set a very good example at times, especially when the team is struggling. When the team is struggling and wins are hard to come by, those are times when you need your captain the most.

honestly i'll be a bit surprised by this too. especially if we keep the same GM and philosophy as always. and with karmanos and JR's recent partial purchase it seems like we will.

The press conference line was a jab at Maurice, nothing more. But LaRose is genuinely one of the last guys who needs to be called out for a consistent effort level.

I don't see any reason to think they'd be gone. They're hardly the kind of money hole that gets relocated. The next CBA is likely to make small-market teams more viable, and that will run through the next decade. The local economy is strong, the national economy is recovering, media income is up, investment is up, the main relocation destinations (Winnipeg, QC) are either filled or imminent to be filled, and other possible candidates will be in line for eventual expansion.
If they were going to fail, it would have happened right around now.

fair points all around.
as a whaler fan who is still sticking with the canes, my warning is that once pk starts talking about the need to sell more season tickets, be scared.
while there might not seem to be an obvious destination at this point, should the team continue to fail to make the playoffs, there's only so long the fan base in carolina will stick with the team.
The local fanbase has actually surprised me with the amount of support given this crappy year... I didn't make this thread to talk about relocation... This is supposed to be a fun thread lol.
