The Business of HockeyDiscuss the financial and business aspects of the NHL. Franchise sales, valuations, TV contracts, ratings, expansion, relocation, the CBA and work stoppage discussion goes here.
Not an NBA fan, so could care less if they do it. But, with the boards, and ice already littered with advertisements, I'd hate to see the NHL starting putting patches on jerseys. The small ones the AHL use are ok, but as already said, they're minor leagues.
I bought a Dreamcast one on Ebay like 5 years ago for like 30 bucks. Also got a JVC Overmars jersey off a guy from BigSoccer 2 years ago. Both are so much better than the crap that's been put out these past few years.
Would really suck if the NHL tried to do this, but I can see them eventually trying it. Money is the most important thing to most people these days, and I bet some NHL execs would be willing to sell out the leagues for more advertising money.
The Leafs and I would assume already have ads on their practice jerseys. It would probably start off as a small patch and then increase from there until it looks like at European hockey jersey.
CFL does it, but I think it is more of a small market/league so they just do enough to get by thing. The NHL has way more then enough cash to need to do this. If it does ever happen though, lets hope its done like the CFL, and not Nascar
You can put up with infinite advert on your games, every single whistle in play is time for at least one advert in american sports (pepsi play of game, or a bunch of marketing one-liners for a few companies before an advert break. Basically anything your commentators say when the puck isn't in play is an advert).
But the idea of a tiny logo that you'll never notice is what'll put you over the edge? I really don't understand you lot xD.
The subject's been bandied about for years and we all know pro sports owners have never turned down a dollar, which leads me to believe that such a move would be a financial disaster.

I would assume they'd like to go the European football route and rather have one ad that's worth a lot money than several worth less.

This. 100% agree. I'd rather have an ad or two on the jerseys (ads that I won't even have time to notice because I' watching the actual game) than to constantly hear the commentators plugging some advertisers.

Differences in culture, man. Here, the uniform is pretty sacred. You guys changed kit every year or 2 anyways. And your shirts were pretty plain before the ads to begin with.
Also remember, you guys pay A LOT of money just to get the games on TV. We don't, and I'd rather have all kinds of ads during the broadcast than have to pay up the ass for Sky Sports.

Some do, some don't.
Don't forget, Sky paid a hell of a lot more money for the broadcasting rights, more than what the NHL gets.
I don't see any point to putting ads on jerseys. You would never see the ads on hockey jerseys because of the speed of the game and how the cameras are positioned in the NHL. The NHL is filmed like no other sport in North America. If they want more ads I'm sure they will just digitally insert them during the game feed. There's absolutely no reason to puts ads on NHL jerseys.

You'd see them easily during stoppages: before a faceoff, guys on the bench, in the penalty box, etc.
Your point? The EPL is bigger than the NHL is. Compare it to the NFL, that's a fair comparison.
Point was they they get some of the money back from subscribers. Same as here in Finland, practically all the sport is on pay-tv (excluding the Olympics and Finland's games and the medal round games from the hockey WC) the only way they'll get even some of it back is via their pay-tv packages. They won't get it via selling ads, because the advertisers won't buy air time from the pay-tv networks.
Not really. I bet Man U sells more jerseys around the world than the entire NBA combined... all with a giant AON ad on them. But let's cling to our silly notions that anything in sports is sacred... we stuck around for board ads, corporate naming rights, presenting sponsorships, TV time outs, relocations, $200 jerseys and so on and so on but somehow a tiny ad patch will be A BRIDGE TOO FAR
This will happen and it won't change anything. To paraphrase Don Draper, it'll shock you how much it won't change anything.
Also, guys, the reason Euro hockey teams have 500 ads on their jerseys is because they need all that revenue to survive. The NHL is much more akin to the big soccer leagues where you can sell one ad for pure profit. The fear here is just so silly. Soccer kit ads have only existed for 30 years, you know, and people thought they would kill the sport, too. Oops.

I understand that. I guess they can make more money charging for subscriptions than they can selling ads. It's a model that wouldn't work here in the US, even if the NFL tried it IMO.
Something to consider, I'm not sure if it's been pointed out yet. The NHL is the only league of the 4 major sports to have boards filled with advertisements. Some baseball stadiums have them on their walls, but every NHL arena literally has the entire boards lined with ads, not to mention the ones on the ice itself. Because of this, I think the NHL would be less inclined to follow another sport doing this right away.

What's interesting about the possibility of the NHL doing it is whether they would make it a league wide thing or a team by team by thing. If it's team by team, it's pretty pointless, as the teams that will profit the most are the teams already with the highest revenue. Thus raising HRR and raising the floor, hurting the lower teams even more than they already are (current CBA implied).
It will happen. It remains the largest untapped revenue source for teams and doesn't change anything about the game. I can't say I care if it happens either.
