I saw the some of the Marlies games with Ashton and he looked like a really good prospect and I'm excited to see him tonight. He always looks like he is a deer caught in the headlights though, but that is just his normal facial expression it seems.

He's absolutely right though. No player would prefer to ride the buses and play in the A over 5 min of ice time in the NHL. The NHL is the goal... planes, 5 star hotels, more money... it's the whole point.

You'll get a far better chance to be noticed playing 5 min in the NHL than 20 min the AHL.

The notion of a player declining a call-up is completely ridiculous.

What number is he going to wear tonight? I know he wears number 18 in the marlies but Brownie has that number.

Don't they have a policy that rookies get bad numbers? I'm not sure if that was a Wilson thing or Burke thing, but most likely the latter.

They aren't given too much of a choice. He likely gets a number in the 40s or 50s like every other rookie here.

It's a Burke thing. He made Grabo switch to 54 at one point but when he acquired Kessel who wanted 81 he allowed Grabo to switch back. He hates bigger numbers.

I say stick him right in the top 6. Get him used to seeing tough defensive matchups. There's really nothing to lose at this point. Lets see what the kid can do.

Bad call. This guy just got to TO and he's already leapfrogging everybody to get the callip despite not proving anything... not a good message to send to Kadri, Colborne, Mueller.

I agree with the philosophy, the Leafs are the only team that doesn't retire numbers so you can't just give those numbers away.

They're replacing two guys who play big, physical hockey so this call-up likely came down to Mueller and Ashton. They likely wanted the player who emulated that play the best. I'm also sure that they explained the situation to each one of the players who felt they deserved a shot, as has been said every time a call-up is made.

Could you imagine the confidence the kid must have now though? He's going to play for the big club! This could help him if / when he gets sent back down to help the Marlies with their playoff run.

I don't really understand this logic.

Ashton, like the rest of the guys, has spent the entire season in the AHL. Just because he's new to the Marlies doesn't mean he should have to work his way up. Maybe management feels he's ahead of the other guys and deserves a chance to show what he can do. Kadri has been up this year for 20 games and Colborne is a center and wouldn't make sense.

I'm a bit surprised he got the call up over Mueller, though. He's an RFA at the end of the season and needs a chance to show what he can do at the NHL level.

I'm almost certain that out of Kadri/Colborne/Mueller don't use their size to their advantage like Ashton. Right now they want size and a guy who will use it.

Colborne is a gentle giant who will be a good #2C and should be good to play with Kessel in a year or two if we can't get someone like Galchenyuk

Kadri is just Kadri, he is a great player with good vision but he falls on the ice more than he passes the puck...and his play has somewhat dropped...probably because he never got to settle with the AHL or the NHL.

Mueller is probably a good depth guy and may turn out to be a good 3rd liner.

Better to see what Ashton can do with the Leafs so they know if he is ready for next year or will need more time. If he can take this opportunity and run with it..we just get more size and pretty much dump one of Army/Connolly/Lombardi next year.

He will likely get in a few shifts tonight but I don't even think there is a morning practice today, so keep your expectations low.

Leafs need a winger with skill and size, Kadri doesn't really bring the size.

If even a Lupul injury doesn't get Kadri a call-up, I don't know what will anymore. He shouldn't have been sent down in the first place. Then it became that he should only get the call to play in the top 6, no more bottom 6 time. Now its become, even when a first line winger spot beside Kessel opens up, it becomes what... he's not big enough again? Under what circumstances is management going to give this guy a fair look? And third line minute beside Lombardi and Connolly is not a fair look (even then, he looked good but his linemates couldn't finish ****). Even those who have it out for him and want to see him traded have to admit that this is only hurting his trade value.
