How much lower....

How much lower can my beloved Maple Leafs sink??? Every year when you think things will turn around....the next season is worse.
1) Head coach gets run out of town by fans
2) I think GM Burke has officially lost all his marbles. He is hanging up on reporters, not showing up for other engagements, paying ridiclous money for for second and third line talent. He is more worried about what Don Cherry thinks. He still thinks this core group of players is going to take him deep into the playoffs at some point.
He is really losing touch with reality
3) The players themselves....what else can you say, involved in a tight playoff race and they all decide to take a month off. Goaltending is horrible, defence are worse,
Yes, they are a young team...a team of young 3rd and 4th liners.
People say they are going in the right direction.......they will finish worse than last year.

I can't recall a time when there was so little to look forward to with this team.

Very strange season. Leafs were a playoff lock and Burke was tweeting as a happy man not long ago. Then crash and reality set in.

last year the goal tending was lights out for almost half a year, and that's when we made the big surge

you can improve 95% of your team (i'm not saying that's what they did) but if your goal tending is bad/ worse you will look like crap

maybe if we can get a legit #1 for next year i'd have something to look forward to

That's what so odd about everything, everything was looking so bright up until Feb and then it went all down hill. Just a nose dive to where they are now.

It is crazy. I would love to see a lottery pick and do this thing right. As a said, I really don't think Burke can take the pressure here and is going to crack soon.
Really, the franchise is the laughing stock of the NHL.

Do you not rememeber the 09/10 season when we were at the basement on the NHL standings AND we didn't have our 1st? I'm not saying we aren't at somewhat of a low point now, but clearly we are much better off now, than we were then.

Aren't there several threads with people whining about Burke already?

Back then you could still believe Burke, he was a man with a plan. He had confidence and swagger. He sounded like he knew what he was doing. Now he is starting to sound pathetic. He sounds like a defeated general leading his troops to a slaughter.

Maybe the Lupul injury gives him an easy out.

Short answer is we pick 4th this year if not higher due to the lottery. Next year we make the playoffs if Burke can get a goalie in the summer and Charlyel can get this team to play defensively sound next season.

I'm giving Burke another year and if no playoffs next season than he can go. Luckly our prospects look good.

I can see a lot of positives on this team and in the minors now. I hope we fall to the basement and get a real talent and then pick up the pieces. The team is better than what they've shown in the past four or five weeks. I think they'll rebound next season. I kind of liken it to the Quebec Nordiques of the 1993-94 when they stumbled with poor goaltending and a lack of confidence and poor defense. Obviously we aren't as skilled, but young teams can be mercurial.

Next year, the Leafs will be in the playoffs thanks to a combination of moves Burkey will make to shore up goaltending, secondary scoring and quality defense. Considering that the farm system didn't even exist when he came in, Burke has done a mighty fine job setting up this team for some semblance of success in Toronto. His time here is going to be a lot like his time in Vancouver - setting up the foundation and watching the dividends pay off many, many years from now.

I just hope they dont go .500 the rest of the season (which is highly likely)

Either tank, or lets string some wins together... just nothing in between!!!

Ultimately, I'm hoping for the win streak =)

It doesnt have to be anything insane.. if they go say 4wins out of next 6, we're right back in the thick of the race

I agree that things are looking better. It would be pretty cool if we miss the playoffs if we caught a break and actually won the lottery....

A team of 3rd and 4th liners? Clearly you don't know how 3rd and 4th liners are supposed to play.

In fact I think one of the biggest holes in the forward group is the lack of a good 3rd line.

Its funny how there was so much optimism and hope surrounding this season....right up until a month ago.........

Pretty sure he's not even close to FA. He's a RFA at the end of his contract, this year was his first year in pro hockey.

It's amazing that Burke couldn't see it, when you and some others clearly saw this soft non compete team would eventually crash and burn.
