Also a possibility that ref said to carle to back up a bit and giroux jokingly slashed him to move him back. I dunno, just thinking of another reason it could happen.

Clearly Giroux is not fit to be captain since he is attempting to injure our own players. He is nothing but a bully in the locker room.

Clearly Giroux IS fit to be captain as he was trying to weed out the problem areas even if it means injuring his own players.

Looked like encouragement to me, kind of like what you do with goaltenders. Just to tap the pad and tell him "let's go!" to give some motivation.
