I found on tsn.ca their different power rankings. They have, of course, team power rankings but they also have similar rankings for players at different positions ( C, LW, RW, D & G) and at different levels (OHL, QMJHL, WHL & AHL). They also have charts for rookies, what they call "Non-Qualifiers" (whatever that means) and 2012 UFAs.
This is obvious. Only 1 top 5 pick in 20 years. And very few other top 10 picks. We've been overachieving for a very long time by signing bandaid free agents. All it takes is one legit top line forward or top pairing defense prospect to pump those ratings up.
The only reason Edmonton is so low is all their top end talent is playing in the NHL. Edmonton is playing on a similar level to us now, but have poor goaltending and defense and their top players are all very young.
How so? I don't think anyone is expecting him to be a number one all-star defenseman.
I'm pretty certain that an overwhelming majority here think he has the potential to be a shutdown D man if it all goes well. I don't see how that's overrating.

I certainly haven't overrated the guy and I'm happy with him if he can be a #3-4 in his prime (or, if we were to do to Tinordi what the Flames did to Giordano, he may as well be a top-pairing guy in Magnitogorsk).
While I don't take these too seriously. I have been saying it for a while. What sunk us this season is our D. Sure a good big center would help. Say we even got one. We'd still have the same issues.
Our PP has sucked because we always rush in. Rarely are we able to settle in. Rarely are we making shots from the blueline that actually matter (if we even get them off). Because our D isn't able to help on the PP. Why would we have put Plekanec there at some point? Heck I'd say our 5v5 isn't far from without this problem either.
Price's stats look mediocre. Any goalie with "meh" D in front of them would look mediocre at best. Yes, "Price has to steal games", yes "Price has looked weak on a few goals". But we've had low goals against before because we had good D to help Price out. So he could do the things we want him to.
The only reason our D is this bad is because of lack of experience at those spots.
Fix the D first, not the center position, that comes after.
These rankings are very stat heavy (considering the list is for FANTASY teams). Its a self fulfilling prophecy. Our team stinks, so our players aren't very good choices on a fantasy team which means they rank low. Ignoring that, it just doesn't indicate more than who is producing RIGHT now. Ryder is ranked above Pat Kane, Ian White is ranked above Lidstrom, Seabrook, Yandle and Doughty. Halak is not the 2nd best goalie in the NHL. What they are is talented NHLers in very favourable positions right now.
Its even less significant in the CHL, especially where stats don't tell the whole story. Example: in the Dub, Patrick Holland is 12, Mark McNeill is 42. Is Patrick 30 spots better than McNeill, or better at all? No, but he has more value because he racks up points on a very good Tri-City junior team.
