I think every kid at my school had some sort of Sharks related gear. It was just a hair behind 49ers gear, which says something considering the 49ers were winning 14 games a year for fun back then.
There was a big boom in roller hockey throughout California during the early 90s right around the same time the Sharks came into existence, and I recall a lot of kids here in SoCal wearing Sharks merchandise. I think the growth and popularity of hockey on the west coast coupled with the attractive Sharks merchandise (those colors just screamed 90s to me) helped propel their sales. It also helped that the Sharks quickly improved from their inception in 1991 to an underdog playoff team in 1994.
Not shocked at all that they made that much off merchandise sales. I still remember when they first opened up shop suddenly seeing a bunch of Sharks hats and shirts..... in freaking Illinois. Just a really well liked logo when it was first introduced.
Yet in the long run it wasn't the best idea, teal was a fashion color and once it went out of fashion so did Sharks gear (aside from fans and people in the area etc.).
I remember having those tiger striped pants in Sharks colours. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
Ya, I sure do. The stock they couldnt sell wound up clothing several 3rd World Countries along with Canucks Stanley Cup Champion t-shirts that never saw the light of day...
I had a white Sharks sweatshirt back when they entered the league, back when I wore stuff of different teams.
I've only just started to like their current jerseys, but I think if they used the jersey in StreetSharks' avatar (with either logo), that would be the best.

We used to live in New Zealand but had family in SF so visited every couple of years. My aunt bought me a Sharks tshirt back in 1992. I didn't really know much about them back then but wore the shirt a lot in New Zealand and remember people commenting on the logo. It was teal with the Sharks logo on the middle. Great logo/color choice for the time.
loved the logo the minute i saw it. Color scheme was great too. Grew up in NJ in the early 90's, and suddenly all of these youth hockey teams in the area started being called the Sharks.
Would love to see them dump the current yellow in their jerseys and go back to that look.
I've always maintained that the original Sharks uniforms were one of the few truly all-time classic looks to come out of the horrible design wasteland that was the 1990's. I would love to see them go back.

There is no yellow (and never has been) in the logo.
There is orange. (And the post-lockout redesign included more orange than previously.) But it's still a subdominate color (compared to the teal/white/black of the logo or jersey color).
AIUI, the designers were trying to get red in the logo when the redesign and the team vetoed vehemently.

I agree, an instant classic. Oddly enough, the Carolina Panthers, a team with an identical color scheme, look ridiculously dated to me.
The guy interviewed didn't actually create the logo or design. He was sharks management, and while he helped decide, this was the guy who actually designed the logo. And also designed the most recent incarnation of the logo and jerseys: http://hockeybydesign.com/2011/12/hb...n-jose-sharks/
The Florida Marlins chose teal as one of their colours because of how well the San Jose Sharks and Charlotte Hornets merchandise was selling. Here is the article written by Chris Creamer, sports logo affectionado.
