Can Kessel still score 40 goals this season?
yes he can.
the opportunity is very real but will he?
currently sitting at 34 goals, he only needs 6 more ( look at me with all my math skills!)
with Lupul out some will see that as a significant challenge, which it will result in, but I believe Kessel can get at minimum 38 goals to cap off a good year for him ( statistically).
thoughts? would kessel getting 40 make missing the playoffs less painful?
When Kessel gets hot he makes his own offense but he really likes to streak. Kessel could could get 6 goals, 12 goals or even no goals for the rest of the season...he is just like that.

Yeah, just look at the start of the season. I'm pretty sure he had 10 goals in the first 11 games.. That's a ridiculous pace. However, he will also go stretches of 5 or more games with no goals, but it always seems to balance out. He's definitely been scoring at a higher clip this year too and just seems to be getting more comfortable.
I think it's pretty realistic, considering how much more time he is being used. And I guess it does take a little away from the sting, as he has clearly shown that he has grown, and hopefully develops further in his career. Ultimately, drafting galchenyuk would be the ultimate consolation prize, and watching the two of them together would be something special to watch.
One thing I could realistically see now that Lupul gone is his shooting to go up. With no longer a good second option on his line, hopefully we start seeing him use that laser of his more.
Not only is this in the wrong thread, but that comment is very stupid.
What happened if we scored more goals?
What if a defenceman poke checked the puck from the opponent to stop a goal?
But no, lets blame the goaltenders.
You are very correct, but at the same time, when this team is ready to contend, they will need a goaltender.
I think Kessel could hit 40 no problem, especially if teams start throwing their back-up goalies against the Leafs (aren't we playing a lot of teams that are really high up in the standings?)

They also need to play sound defense which was the reason for the loss to Boston on Tuesday.
I really want him to get 40.
Is he the only guy in the NHL with 30 or more goalsin each of the past four seasons? I think i saw that on TSN.
I could not care less how many goals that soft little no defense cherry-picker gets. I'd trade all his goals for a good center and a goalie prospect in a minute.
Getting 40 wouln't ease the downer of missing the playoffs. A top 3 draft pick would. That being said, I think he does get 40.
Getting 40 goals from kessel and the leafs getting a top 3 pick would be my perfect season out of the last 7 just bad timing though. Would have been nice if this happened a few years ago instead.
