Edmonton's 2012 1st round pick (2nd overall)

Assume Edmonton finishes second to last. Since the Oilers have had top picks for years now, do you believe Edmonton would be willing to dangle that second overall pick for a nice package? I know the Rangers desperately need offensive talent. Grigorenko or Yakupov would help big time in a line up filled with grinders.

What do you Oilers fans want for that pick?

Obviously the conversation would start with one of your Dmen. MDZ.

I wonder if they'd be willing to trade down to 7th and the Leafs go up and grab Grigorenko

I think Staal is more in line with Edmonton's needs IMO. Not sure if I'd pull the trigger on that one but if I was Sather I would definitely sit at my desk and think for a gooood while... The deal would have to consist of one core D-man and sprinkles on top, you can only give so much for an unknown though, even if it is the second overall pick.

Well, first of all, you shouldn't be assuming that its the 2nd overall pick. There's enough time left for the Oilers to pull into the 4th or 5th spot. Mind you, if they play for the rest of the year like they have tonight, it'll be a third consecutive first overall pick.

That said, if it is a first or second overall, I would want Girardi in the deal. So its likely that no deal could be done if I were in charge. Probably Girardi and a conditional first (first if the Rags win the cup next year, 2nd if they don't) for the pick and Theo Peckham.

I don't believe he would think as long as you seem to think.

Your team played great with and without him. The chance to add a talent like one of those two forwards, at a discount (ELC factor totally comes into play) would make him pull the trigger. And before I get yelled at saying money is no issue for the Rangers, cap space is. And even if they aren't being squeezed, switching D talent for O talent while gaining cap space is always a good move.

It's only an assumption for the sake of trade talks. Not saying Edmonton is guaranteed the second overall pick. IMO I would prefer to trade Girardi over Staal.

Rangers fans are probably pulling their hair out reading this post, but the fact of the matter is that this team needs legitimate offensive talent in the worst kind of way, and with our top D men prospects coming up to the NHL level, at least one of these guys has to go. Sad, but true.

Oh, I understand why, don't worry, ha ha.

What is the ranking of Rangers d-men in your opinion? I said Girardi because the Oilers need a legitimate top line guy who can do a bit of everything. I like Staal, but we have Smid, who isn't as good but brings the same tools. I respect what MDZ has become, but question if he would be as effective without such a solid core of d-men already around him. To me, Girardi seems like the only clear cut number one guy who fills all of the Oilers needs.

Here's how I rank 'em.

1.) MDZ
2.) McDonagh
3.) Staal
4.) Girardi

They are all All-Star calibur defense men. Girardi however is not a big goal scorer, but for a defensive defenseman he will get you a pretty nice amount of assists. In a typical year he will give you 5 goals and 23 assists. Staal has more goal scoring potential, but doesn't get as many assists.

MCD and MDZ are very, very close. It's almost too close to call, but I give the nod to Del Zotto because he is almost as sound as MCD defensively, but provides more offense with a higher projected career offensively.

I'd take Girardi over all 3 other guys. Can't coach what he understands.

This is really tough to assess, but I think Edmonton could really use whoever falls to them at #2. We might have an excellent first line but our secondary scoring is pretty poor. We're not that high up in goals for at even strength.

That being said, if NYR offered a defensive package involving MDZ or something I'd take that for sure. I'm a huge fan of MDZ. Although, we'd probably still suck because our goaltending is mediocre.

Well, here goes...

To

Oilers 2012 1st round pick

To

Dan Girardi

Straight up. All-Star defensive defenseman for top offensive, likely NHL ready prospect.

Edmonton could trade for a d-man...but why don't they just draft a d-man(Murry/Dumba/Reilly).If they did trade it i could bring back a good 3-4 d-man,because ultimatly picks are unproven

We have a solid defensive defenseman- we call him Smid. What the Oilers need is a young top pairing offensive defenseman. Probably not as good as Doughty or Pietrangelo, but that type of player.

I honestly can only see Edmonton trading that pick to Montreal for Subban. Edmonton would want a young, marketable top pairing defenseman for that pick, and Subban is probably the best guy for that job in Edmonton right now

I think the Oilers have to ask themselves in this scenario .... these are the last few no.2 selections ...

2011 - Landeskog
2010 - Seguin
2009 - Hedman
2008 - Doughty
2007 - JVR
2006 - Staal
2005 - Ryan
2004 - Malkin

What would be the asking price for these players? Fairly high to very, very high for everyone except maybe JVR.

How many of these players would you be able to get for a Dan Girardi?

Even if the Oilers were to deal this player, I'd make the argument it would be much smarter to wait a year or two, the return back would likely be exponentially higher.

Not signed for two more years - no. Want 5 years under contract at least.

Secondary scoring is fine on the oil but bottom 6 scoring is putrid.

Also need more offensive D. Scoring from the D men is near the bottom of the league.

I'd want PK or OEL those would be my top choices. Something around Del Zotto could work though.

Wish Edmonton was in the market for a winger instead as I would offer Nash for that pick +. Maybe Edmonton would be interested in Tyutin + LA pick + 31st pick + Phoenix 2nd rounder? Regardless I wish Columbus could get #1 and #2 but it isn't going to happen. But I guess if the Oiler's offered Smid + 16ish pick +32nd pick + another 2nd rounder I would probably vote to decline that..
