2nd Overall
LA 3rd Rounder 2012 (from Penner deal)

TOR 1st (5th-8th overall)
Luke Schenn

Leafs get Grigorenko with the pick and also get into the 3rd round, while Edmonton gets a young, physical defenceman and can still draft the likes of a Reinhardt/Trouba/Reilly/Pouliot with the pick - they make two solid acquisitions to move the rebuild forward.

Seems like a good deal for both sides.

Is this a joke? Why would oilers add a pick and your going to have to add to jump that many spots.

Nope, just my evaluation of value. I hardly think an added mid-round 3rd is the kind of difference in value that equates to a 'joke'. But I suppose that's the kind of wisdom that 41 posts brings.

2007 - JVR
2006 - Staal
2005 - Ryan
2004 - Malkin

What would be the asking price for these players? Fairly high to very, very high for everyone except maybe JVR.

How many of these players would you be able to get for a Dan Girardi?

Even if the Oilers were to deal this player, I'd make the argument it would be much smarter to wait a year or two, the return back would likely be exponentially higher.
The NYR options are intriguing and EDM-NYR seem like a good match in terms of needs and assets.

But you make an excellent point. It would come down to how certain Sather and his scouting staff are on Grigo.

If they are certain, then I'd make an agressive counter offer. Girardi + 1st in 2012 + 1st in 2013 for 2nd overall + 3rd in 2012.

That's two strong assets plus a switch of 32-34 places in the draft.

Sather wouldn't accept, but doubt he'd hang up the phone either.

Why wouldn't the oilers do this? They get a young tough defenseman who can be a rock on defense. If the pick is 5th overall we can draft galenychuk if he falls to us. Or Murray, dumba, faksa, forsberg. Edm would be dumb not to do this if the pick is in the top 6

I could DEFINITELY see this happening. I don't think the Oil see Murray as that far away from Grigs. I'd bet a 2nd and an option to switch 1sts next year or the year after would do it.

To MTL: 2nd overall
To EDM: 3rd overall, 2nd in 2012, option to switch firsts in 2013 and 2014

To Vancouver:

1-3 overall pick 2012
Ryan Whitney

To Edmonton:

Cory Schneider
Keith Ballard
Chris Tanev
1st rounder 2013

The Oiler's D will look much better with a proper goalie behind them.
The Canucks haven't had the ability to draft great young talent based on the success they achieved recent years.

Thoughts?

agree, 8th might be a stretch but if we are talking Schenn + 5th or 6th i think it makes a lot of sense

Oilers could add Schenn plus another solid d prospect which would be huge moving forward

Leafs could trade up and draft Trouba ...i'd hope they pick Grigorenko but you never know

would depend on Oilers opinion of Murray though, if they thought he was that much better then the rest of the d in the draft and Schenn then they'd just take him and pass on Grig

NYR:
EDM 1st 2012
EDM 3rd 2012

EDM:
Marc Staal
NYR 1st

I think something like that would be worthwhile for Edmonton, and moves the top defenceman New York is most willing to sacrifice.

The value is close, but it makes no sense for the Rangers to trade for futures. Maybe they would consider if they win the cup this year.

If the Edm pick were lower I would like to work a deal around Nashville's first + Ellis. Not for 2-3rd overall though.

If the Oilers take Grigorenko, I could see some kind of deal along the lines of Gagner + Peckham for Ellis + another piece/pick or something.

I get why they'd do it. They get a potential franchise player in a position of weakness in exchange for a player in a position of strength. It also adds a bit of cap flexibility, since New York will need to give big raises to Del Zotto a raise this year, and McDonagh, Anisimov and Stepan next year.

Depends on if they think the player they draft will be ready to contribute next year, or whether it's a project for a few years down the line.

Tempting ... but would you really want to meet a team with Toews, Kane, Griogrenko, Hossa, Gagner, Sharp, Keith, etc. in the playoffs for the next 5-6 years? Yikes.

Montreal likely won't select Grigs. They want Galchenyuk. I think they do this move just to guarantee first dibs. The Oil will likely still have their pick of Grigs or Murray.

This must be a joke. Toronto would have to add or replace Schenn with a 2-4 dman.

EDM is going to pick up Murray at 2, or else NYI will at 3.

EDM has tonnes of star forwards. They need that #1 D man.
