Did You Know?
Yeah, that team we're playing with 9 less wins than us is higher than us in the goddamned standings. God bless the division winner rule...oh, and they're only ahead of us in one statistic: faceoff percentage...and that's by a whopping 1.1%.
Florida, who hold the bleeping 3rd seed, is a -26 overall on the season. 15th placed Montreal (28th overall in the NHL) is a -13.
Brooks Orpik is one of only 3 defenders in the top 10 of hits in the NHL, with his 215 in 57 games ranking 8th in the league. The only defender above him is Toronto's Luke Schenn, who has 218 in 64 games. The Islanders' Matt Martin leads the league with 314, 75 ahead of anyone else. The Islanders also have two of the top 5 takeaway players in the league and their top player in giveaways ranks a measly 30th...I don't really trust the Islanders real-time stats keeper.
Pittsburgh is one of 7 teams this late in the season to not have a single game end with the shots even. The Penguins have outshot their opponents 47 times this year and been outshot 19 times.
Pittsburgh is tied for 2nd in the league, along with Boston, for victories after being behind after 2 periods of play with 7. Last season the Penguins were the only team in the league with 0 such victories.
The Panthers are 5-5-1 on the second night of a back-to-back series this season.
The Penguins' 3 day break between playing Boston on Sunday and the Rangers next Thursday will be the last time the team has more than a day off for the remainder of the season. The stretch run contains 14 games in 23 days. I picked a pretty lousy time to be leaving the country.
For those that don't frequent the OT thread - I will be leaving for Finland on the 14th and won't be returning until the 2nd. The trip is to meet a Finnish friend of mine for a road trip through Lapland/Sápmi followed by a weekend in his hometown of Kuopio (where we'll see a playoff game or two for his beloved KalPa SM-liiga team), a mid-week trip to Stockholm, and a weekend in Helsinki before I fly back. Sweden and Norway will be countries #16 & #17 for me, somehow avoided during my semester in Denmark (I spent New Year's in Finland with the friend I'm visiting, being country #15 nearly 27 months ago).
Sápmi is the cultural area where the Sami people live. The area stretches across the northern regions of Norway, Sweden, and Finland while also spilling into the Murmansk Oblast in Russia. There's estimated to be 163,000 ethnic Sami in the world, making it ethnically similar in size to the Sioux in North America. The United States actually holds the 2nd largest population, behind only Norway, of the Sami.
1996 Hockey Hall of Fame Inductee Börje Salming, who played 1,148 games in the NHL (all but 49 of those for the Toronto Maple Leafs), is of Sami heritage and was born in Kiruna, the northernmost city in Sweden.
Like most things involved with Christmas, a large portion of the Santa Claus mythology is based in Northern European Lore (I have previously made a DYK thread about the holiday). St. Nicholas, who Santa Claus is based on, was a 4th century Catholic Saint from Lycia, in modern day Turkey, far from any snow or reindeer. He left coins in the shoes of people who left them out for him as a means of charity, which made him the model for the Dutch Sinterklaas centuries later, who's immigrants brought the tradition to the young United States of America, where the tradition expanded. The anonymously written poem of 'A Visit From Santa Claus' (aka The Night Before Christmas), which is generally attributed to Clement Clarke Moore , introduced reindeer to the game.
The poem lists the reindeer as 'tiny', which is why most modern renditions show the reindeer more along the size (as well as the features) of more common deer found in the more populated regions of North America, rather than actual reindeer.
The reindeer names Donner and Blitzen derive from German words for thunder and lightning.
While modern North American tradition dictates Santa Claus is based from an improbable location at the North Pole, the three of the Scandinavian countries vie for his 'actual' location, with Finland having a full blown theme park signifying his base (on a separate note...the formerly named 'Santa Claus Land', now Holiday World (it wasn't a PC change...they added other holidays into their theme), in Santa Claus, Indiana, is literally the only reason to go to Indiana...it also is the only amusement park in the world that can compete with the collection of wooden roller coasters that Kennywood has).
Tomte (or Nisse) is an elf-like creature that was the basis of the modern Christmas/Jul holiday in Scandinavia, replacing the traditional Julbock (aka 'Yule Goat'). Tomte was a small (think garden gnome sized), gray-bearded man who was thought to look over farms. It was thought to be easily angered and quite the sociopath). The tradition involved leaving porridge for Tomte on Jul/Christmas Night, if his payment was not received he would enact some troll-like behavior and bring minor ruin to the farm. Add things up here...northern Europe...Sinterklaas, elfs leaving gifts, and reindeer...oh, and the Christmas tree stuff that I mentioned in the other thread and...well, I won't finish my thought there, else the GDT be moved to the politics board.
Reindeer and Caribou...same basic thing. One makes slightly better coffee.
Pittsburgh has no sister cities in Scandinavia...for shame.
Some of Pittsburgh's sister cities include Astana, Kazakhstan (the capital of Kazakhstan and home of Barys Astana of the KHL, for whom former Penguin Andrew Hutchinson currently plays for); Hamilton, Ontario (Canada's steel city); Bilbao, Spain (Spain's steel city); Charleroi, Belgium; Da Nang, Vietnam; Ostrava, Czech Republic (home of HC Vítkovice Steel); Sheffield, England (home of the Sheffield Steelers); and Wuhan, China...connect the dots...
One of Missoula's two sister cities has a namesake in one of my favorite Simpsons quotes ever...Palmerston North, New Zealand.
Kuopio, my home base during my trip, is sister cities with Minneapolis and Winnipeg...sounds about right (I have been to Kuopio before, briefly...I went to a KalPa-Jokerit game).
Some notable Kuopians: Pekka Halonen (painter), Olli Jokinen, Sami Kapanen, Kimmo Timonen, and a bunch of ski jumpers I'd never heard of.
KalPa, which has become my favorite European team by default, is sadly owned by a former Flyer and two current Flyers. Sami Kapanen owns the majority of the team, while Kimmo Timonen (8%) and that ******** Scott Hartnell (5%) are also partners. On the bright side, their colors are black and gold. KalPa has never won the SM-liiga, and their best finish has been a silver medal in 1990-91, but they are currently first in the SM-liiga with 3 regular season games left to go.
The only American on KalPa's roster: Ryan Lannon, 2002 Penguins draftee and 3 year veteran of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The last time I saw a KalPa game 2006 Penguins draftee Timo Seppänen played for them...and was not exactly well liked by the local fan base.
The game I go to in KalPa will be my first playoff hockey game I'll go to ever. I've been to 100+ Penguins games, but they were almost entirely in that 2002-2006 window where we sucked. Hurray. The only playoff games I've ever been to, in any sport, have been Montana Grizzlies football games. At least with the move to Los Angeles upcoming I'll be living in a city with playoff hockey for the first time since 2001.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil is a 2010 comedy/horror film directed by Eli Craig starring Tyler Labine, Alan Tudyk, and Katrina Bowden. The film is a spoof of the horror genre, being set in the woods of West Virginia as a group of attractive college students go for a vacation only to run into the well-meaning hillbillies Tucker and Dale, who's social awkwardness begins a chain reaction of horrifying events as the two try to enjoy their first weekend at their newly bought cabin.
Alan Tudyk is probably best known as Hoban Washburne, aka "Wash" on the all-too-soon cancelled Fox shot Firefly.
Katrina Bowden is best known as Cerie, the assistant, on the show 30 Rock.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil is on Netflix WiN...watch it, damn it.
Aurora Borealis? At this time of year? At this time of day? In this part of the country? Localized entirely within your kitchen?
It's A Great Day For A Cup of Coffee

If we can come to terms with this indifference and accept the challenges of life within the boundaries of death, our existence as a species can have genuine meaning and fulfillment. However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light.” - Stanley Kubrick
I don't know where to start. Amazing GDT. I have no clue where you find some of the stats, but i love them. The pictures are hilarious. I still don't ****ing understand this whole Aurora Borealis thing but the pictures all around the internet have been sweet.
The Northern Lights were seen on the first night of the Battle of Fredericksburg, early in the Civil War. Most did not know what they were seeing. Many Union soldiers who had survived the first day of battle, but were pinned down and couldn't move, laid in the cold all night and saw them. Also, General Lee wrote in his journal that he took the lights in the sky to mean that God favored his cause, since they slaughtered every wave of attack against their fortified position.
Engo and Letang were on the ice this morning. Not likely they play tonight, but looks like a good chance they could have both back by next weekends stretch against Atlantic Conference rivals.
I guess I haven't been watching the standings all that closely because I had no idea the SE leaders were that far behind in points. What an awful division.
Finland is an amazing country, one of my best lady friends is from Pyhäjoki and currently living in Tampere. I also have a good buddy from Raahe. Definaltey worth taking a trip there at least once in your life, and not just to Helsinki as that is the most "touristy" destination. Get outside of the capital city and there is just so much to indulge yourself in. Wonderful people, great culture, delicious food, magnificent landscape, and plenty of incredibly passionate hockey fans. The Sami are quite interesting, one of the original indigenous peoples of Europe still around.
Let's win for the Finns! Philthy blew out Florida last night, Geno can put up at least 5goals, eh? I'm hoping for nothing less than a 3 point night from #71.
I like how All but one team in the Atlantic has quit a few more goals for than against. Then you have the **** bag SE lol. Division leader thats a -26 and No team in the SE will finish a plus. With the way the league is now I hope they get rid of the division winner's getting the top 3. Should be the top 3 teams period.
