Less than Spezza for 3 years because of the upcoming CBA. I'll guess 6.5m.

Sorry, he's married (engaged? Married I think).

We could trade Liles, because Karlsson will be out for the full 2 mins on the PP.
Why would a team ruin their own cap structure just to spite a rival? Makes no sense. Regardless, Karlsson will not be with the Leafs next year. Even if they offered him a 20-year, league max contract, we could match it.

This is what I'm thinking. And the skinny is (not that you would have had any way of knowing this) that he's working on a 3 year deal with management. Its just a question of salary and/or incentives. I imagine it would have a NMC as well.

He's worth 7 but I think he will get closer to 6 over 3 years.

What's wrong with 10 years, 65 million? Why do three years and have him still be an RFA when he's only gonna do this again and again and ask for more. Sign, here, here and here, done.

Guy doesn't have to accept an offer sheet from another team. He can say no. Karlsson being mentored by Alfie, there probably isn't enough money in Toronto for him to want to go play there. Wouldn't be surprised at all if Hogtown is on Erik's no-go list. Plus he's about to get married and probably raise a family. Ottawa's a much better environment for this.

Because at current salary levels the maximum offer sheet you can sign a guy without giving up a first round pick is $3.1 million. I'm pretty sure Karlsson wouldn't even sign for that and if he did the Sens would match with pleasure.

He should get as much as Doughty on a shorter-term deal IMHO.

3 years, 6.5 per.

Kids gonna get stud money but I highly doubt he forces his way to 7 million like Doughty did. Sens will give him more to stay in RFA...might as well give him his #.

Possible offer sheet? LOL.

Doughty had to scratch and claw like a baby for that money.

Really doubt it's going to come to that here. His mentor always took less...not saying Erik's gonna go for less, but I don't see him trying to clean us dry as a 21 year old.

You don't know that this will continue beyond this year. I think he'll continue to be very productive, but on the other hand, who saw coming what happened to Redden?

Amen. Really makes you wonder, in this day and age of scouting, how on Earth he fell to the 15th pick, and was ranked as a 2nd rounder by some teams in his draft year.

I agree. I don't think there's a chance in you-know-where that he signs an offer sheet, barring something ridiculous like league max for 15 years or something, but I'm curious what fans of other teams would offer sheet him for if they could, especially given all the cap room we have.

They're looking at a 3 year deal from the media reports.

I don't see him going higher than Spezza's cap hit in that time frame, plus any premium that Murray's trying to pay - I'd assume they're also leaving some room for a 'raise' as well as not setting the bar too high for media expectations.

So the 5.5-6.5M range for 3 years is probably the most reasonable.

Then after you can do 6.5M+ for an extended term.

The shorter contract is good too because it means he needs to still perform for his money, rather than some of these kids lately getting long term deals and then fading away once the big dollar years are gone.

Of course, the biggest issue with a 3 year deal is that we're doing the next dance with Spezza and Karlsson in the same year.

As a Sens fan I really want a 3 year deal... I would prefer to overpay on a 3 year deal(7M/per) than to give him a crazy long deal at lower money(5-6M)... Id rather him prove to be worth more after the 3 years than commit to it now... He may never hit these point totals again so I dont think its wise to pony up for 7-10 years based on an incredible season... I realize he was trending up towards this but there is a big difference between a 60-65 pt season and 75+ point seasons...

I just dont trust any contract over 5 years or so... Too many things can happen...

For a first contract?!

The numbers people are throwing out are like he's a 5 year pro.

Look at Doughty, Myers, Schenn, Stamkos, Hedman, etc...

All big money deals off their ELC...
