New Fan Guide

Hi, I'm quickly becoming a big fan of the Avs. This is very awkward considering they are division rivals to my beloved Canucks. Nonetheless I don't know very much about the organization. Could anyone be nice enough to put together a cheat sheet for this club? Strengths, weaknesses, prospects, most popular and least popular players, that sort of stuff. Thanks if you can help!

Strengths

- Youngest team in the league
- Least expensive team in the league yet are fighting for a playoff spot while still being the youngest team in the league
- Fast as hell and quite good at forechecking
- Very entertaining it's hard to find an Avs game boring
- Great core of young players
- Great GM who has balls and isn't afraid to make a blockbuster trade if it fills a need and he does it by acquiring young players who will be part of our future
- This team is also gritty they don't back down from anybody and they play a physical game
- Great at shootouts, I think we are 8-1 this season (7-0 with Varly, Giguere sucks at shootouts) and 19-2 (I think) in our last 21
- Good goaltending with Varly and Giggy
- Good at drafting
- A lot of forward depth
- Avs fans on HFBoards are awesome

Weaknesses

- Coach is an absolute dumbass, he is our main weakness.
- We can't beat teams in our own division although we are 3 for 3 against our last 3 Northwest opponents ( Wild x2 and the Oilers so it doesn't mean much)
- Generally don't show up in big games
- Need more leadership and veteran presence which I personally think is directly related to us not showing up in big games
- Defense likes to break down randomly
- Forwards need to backcheck harder and just play better defensively in general
- Owner may or may not like to spend money. We hope he does and we hope he will on July 1st.
- This team also needs an elite goalscorer like Parise

Prospects

These are our top prospects IMO

Stefan Elliott
Duncan Siemens
Tyson Barrie
Calvin Pickard
Joey Hishon
Michael Sgarbossa
Cameron Gaunce
Sami Aittokallio

Most Popular Players

Again this is my personal opinion this board has a lot of different opinions on different players

- Ryan O'Reilly
- Gabriel Landeskog
- Paul Stastny
- Erik Johnson
- Semyon Varlamov
- Milan Hejduk
- Peter Mueller
- Matt Duchene (Not this year though)

Least Popular Players

Once again just my opinion

- Kevin Porter
- Cody McLeod (Although he is turning it around big time)
- Shane O'Brien (Some like him but I think that the guy is an idiot)

Teams We Don't Like

- Vancouver Canucks, I'm sorry but as an Avs fan you can't like the Canucks
- Detroit Red Wings (obviously)
- St.Louis Blues, their fans were really annoying after we made the trade last year
- Toronto Maple Leafs, their fans are idiots who try to get Stastny for crap but after they realize that we don't want Stastny for their crap they bash Stastny.

Players

Steve Downie

- His father passed away when they were driving to Steve's hockey practice when he was still young and he is deaf from one of his ears so its hard not to cheer for the guy
- Awesome playmaker, we did not expect this but the guy can make awesome plays because of his vision
- He plays physical and added a lot of grit to our line-up he is also not afraid to stick up for his teammates

Nickname: George or I think it was Flanagan who called him Furious George which is awesome

Matt Duchene

- Our most talented player but he is having a rough year
- He is very talented but not very smart
- Likes to spin a lot and often turns the puck over in the offensive zone
- He needs to work on his defense
- Like I said he is our most talented player he can do things that a 21 year old shouldn't be able to do
- Once he becomes a smarter player and figures it out he will become a very dangerous player
- He loves country music, fishing and vodka

Nickname: Dutchy

Milan Hejduk

- Our captain and has been a very good player for us for a long time so we love him
- Has slowed down a lot this year we are not sure if it's because of the added pressure of being a captain or if it is him playing bad because of his age or if it's a combination of both of them
- Great wrist shot

Nickname: The Duke or Hedgie

David Jones

- Very inconsistent but is a 20 goal scorer
- Started off the season well but played like crap in the middle and is playing well again as of late
- Plays really well with Stastny
- He can play on the PK so he is not bad defensively and has a good shot
- Has a big body but he needs to be more physical
- We think he could possibly have a drinking problem

Nickname: The Pirate or The Drunk

Chuck Kobasew

- Good 4th liner and as long as he only has to be a 4th liner than he plays well
- Pretty good defensively and he can play the PK
- Started off the season in the top 6 so he played like crap but once he moved to the bottom 6 he played a lot better

Nickname: Kobascrew or as I call him Chuck 'The ****' Kobasew

Gabriel Landeskog

- Doesn't play like a rookie instead plays like he has been in the league for 10 years
- Really good defensively especially for a rookie and is very physical
- Puts everything towards the net
- Doesn't back down from anybody
- A very smart player
- I don't doubt him becoming him a PPG player with elite defense in the future
- You will notice him every game you watch him in he just dominates out there

Nickname: Landy, Lando, Thor, Viking, Angry Viking, 'Skog

Jay McClement

- Came with Erik Johnson in that trade last year
- Amazing defensively and on the PK
- He is one of the reasons our PK has improved so much this year
- One of the best defensive forwards in the game right now in my opinion
- Also a great leader

Nickname: Silent Jay

Jamie McGinn

- Traded for him at the deadline this year and he has been a pleasant surprise
- He is very physical and hits everything
- He isn't afraid to go to the front of the net to score
- Has really good chemistry with Jones and Stastny which gives us another line who can score

Nickname: Ginner or we can try to start Mac 11

Cody McLeod

- Last few weeks we have seen a different Cody McLeod than we are used to and he is playing pretty well
- Usually fights but is even fighting more now and winning more than usual
- Isn't a liability on the ice and adds toughness because of his fighting and his physical play
- He is our tough guy for sure and our go to guy for fights

Nickname: The Highlander or I personally call him Fox

Peter Mueller

- Amazing shot
- Good hockey sense
- He got a concussion in April 2010 and tried playing in September of 2010 but got concussed again. He came back at the beginning of this season but had PCS so he had to sit out until mid-January this year when he came back and has been playing since although he did sit out a bit during this time because of a Torso injury
- He has been pretty slow since he came back although he was never a great skater
- Very religious guy with a lot of tattoos, I just thought you should know that

Nickname: Mules or Ferris

Ryan O'Reilly

- He has been our best player this year
- Our leading point getter
- He will be a future Selke winner
- Reminds me a lot of Bergeron
- Very smart player especially for a 21 year old even when he came into the league as an 18 year old even though he was drafted in the 2nd round he was very smart
- Amazing defensively it's shocking to see how good he is defensively when you watch him
- This is his breakout year offensively the previous 2 years he was a defensive specialist now he is great at both ends of the rink

Nickname: Factor, Radar, ROR

Mark Olver

- The guy is 5'10 probably even smaller than that and 170 lbs. but doesn't fear anybody
- Hits everything he can, it's remarkable how many hits he has considering how small he is
- He is also a big pest he is always in the middle of scrums and constantly facewashing guys
- He is the definition of a little guy with a big heart

Nickname: Olive, Olvie, Oliver, Little Ball of Hate

Kevin Porter

- Friend of that dick Quincey
- He plays great

Nickname: Great Game or Kevin 'I Played Great' Porter

Paul Stastny

- Our highest paid player
- Leaf fans want him really badly
- One of our best defensive forwards
- Really good at faceoffs
- Awesome playmaker
- Needs to play with big forwards and not Duchene
- Very smart player who doesn't have the most skill but makes up for it with his smart play which makes him one of our better players
- He is an Assistant Captain on this team
- He seems like a really big dork but he is awesome
- If you visit these boards more you will realize that he is my favourite player

Nickname: Staz, Son of Stastny, Pauly Walnuts, teh Cazper!!1!

Stefan Elliott

- Will be a really good offensive d-man but right now is not very good
- He has a great wrist shot
- He is a smart player offensively who is also a very good playmaker
- Right now he is way too weak and soft for the game especially as a defender
- He needs to be smarter defensively and get more physical
- Right now he isn't doing much offensively either but I have no doubt that he will be better as long as he gets to work on his game in the AHL

Nickname: Stef? Ellie? Honestly I don't know any.

Jan Hejda

- Had a really rough start to the season but he has picked it up
- Was brought in to make our defense more defensive and bigger than last year which it is now
- When he is asked to be a shutdown defenseman is when he succeeds when you ask him to do other stuff like be a puckmover he does not play well
- O'Byrne and him have done really well as of late to provide solid defense on the backend
- Some ******* shot his horse back in Columbus earlier in the season

Nickname: I don't know any but it is fun to say Hejdas gonna Hejd

Matt Hunwick

- He was our whipping boy last year because he was absolute ****
- He has turned it around this year and hasn't just been solid but actually has been good
- The guy has some serious wheels one of the fastest skaters in the league
- He has an awesome attitude even though he has been a 7th d-man this whole season he hasn't complained even though rookies have come up and played instead of him
- He has barely played this season yet he sees everything in a positive way which is why he is so awesome

Nickname: Hunny or Funwick

Erik Johnson

- Easily our best defenseman and arguably our best player
- He is playing like a #1 defenseman this year
- He is really dominant out there you will notice him for sure
- He does have a tendency to stand around in the defensive zone sometimes
- He can knock guys off the puck really easily
- Has a good slapshot but he has trouble getting it through
- He has been our best defenseman since Bob Blake
- Hard to stop him when he is pissed
- He can move the puck with ease and people bounce off of him when he has the puck

Nickname: EJ

Shane O'Brien

- The guy tries to do too much, more than he is capable of
- Often has defensive breakdowns
- Can move the puck surprisingly well but does it way too often
- Is a leader on this team
- Often sticks up for guys but a lot of the time it is just him talking trash and not actually fighting

Nickname: SOB

Ryan O'Byrne

- He really has helped this team improve their PK and he is one of our main parts to our PK
- Him and Hejda have been a good shutdown pairing
- He is our hit and blocked shots leader I believe
- He is a warrior, last year he took a skate to the face from Taylor Hall but he finished his shift before leaving the ice to get stitched up.
- He is arguably our best defensive d-man

Nickname: ROB or Big Sexy

Ryan Wilson

- He is our best hitter and what I mean by that is that he can throw some big hits
- He is a pretty good fighter
- He isn't afraid to stick up for his teammates
- He has played pretty good this year but he does make a few mistakes
- He is an ideal #5-6 d-man

Nickname: Wilsauce or The Hammer

Jean-Sebastien Giguere

- He is a leader on this team and has helped out Varmy a lot this season
- He is a solid back-up who is putting up good numbers this year
- He has awesome positioning but he is as slow as a sloth and he doesn't have the quickest reaction time
- Was our starting goalie for a part of the season but is now the back-up again
- There is one poster who has turned most of us fans against him (with his constant dick riding of Giguere) but we still love Giguere

Nickname: Giggy

Semyon Varlamov aka Steve Varmalov

- He started off the season really well and than wasn't great in the middle of the season but is playing well again
- We traded our 2012 1st and one of our 2nd rounders for him and it was definitely worth it because you can tell the potential that Varmy has
- He is super athletic so he makes some awesome saves
- He is money in the shootout by being 7-0 this season with a 90.5 (19/21) percent save percentage
- It is nearly impossible to beat him on a breakaway
- He needs to work on his rebound control and his consistency issues
- He has really improved his English from his time in Washington
- He could possibly be a Russian Spy

Nickname: Varly, Varls Barkley, Wallamov, Starlamov, Steve Varmalov, Varmy, and mainly 'Steve'

We actually traded the 2012 pick for Varly not the 2013. Awesome job Bricky nonetheless.

don't you hate it when someone quotes a really long post and adds nothing of value?

Really good breakdown Brick, I think your a little harsh on SOB though. He makes some UGLY turnovers, tries to imitate duchene's spinoramas too much, and takes some stupid penalties(he has been much more disciplined the last few weeks though).

O'brien is paid 1.1 mil per year, Hunwick over 1.5 (yes I know he has been playing well for the last few weeks, but his role is the 6th/7th guy and was the butt of the whole board's jokes until recently). SOB is a decent agitator, is a great locker room guy, can play physically, and can handle the puck well for his size. You do not get a package of size, puckhandling, physicality, and leadership for 1.1 mil without any drawbacks. He is being paid to be a 3rd pairing defenseman, and when he plays that role he does fine. When we ask him to be a first pairing guy he gets caught looking stupid.

Anyway...just thought id give the side of the SOB apologists

One thing you want to check out for sure is 11/12 media guide, available as PDF from here: http://avalanche.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=64842

It doesn't have opinions about anything (unlike BrickAHL's post which was basically nothing but opinions - whether that's a good or bad thing, that's totally different thing), but if you want to see how Avs got into this point and who are taking them to the future, the book is great reading.

While they are mostly opinions, its basically the general consensus that those are the opinions of the Avs board (obviously people will disagree with some of it)

Hahaha I think OP is trollin', because D2M is right. He thinks Calgary is a better team.

You get to follow the same team G2P does. That in and of itself is an honor.

He can get facts from anywhere so I thought I would give him the opinions that most Avs fans share about this team.

idk if I'll waive my NMC and I doubt a team would want to take on my lengthy disciplinary history.
