CBC: Salary cap to rise 5 to 8 M. (69 to 72 M) in 2012-2013

They were talking on CBC how the salary cap is estimated to rise anywhere from 5 to 8 M for a total of $69 to $72 M for next season. Helps in cap flexibility and signing Hall and Eberle to long term deals in a year.

Thoughts in general on the 69-72M figure?

Which means that the Oilers shouldn't worry about overspending if it means landing a legitimate top-four defenceman. Of course, some folks will still be wary about "cap management."

Despite all of this (ridiculous) flexibility I'll bet that we see an all time low for activity at next year's trade deadline. Viva NHL general manager timidness and incompetence!

Can you imagine that AND the amnesty clause to dump the Horcoff contract? There would be no excuses not to build this team to be a playoff team next season

The Oilers won't dump Horcoff no matter what. They love and truly value his contributions to the team.

The amnesty would only ever be fathomable if there is a roll back.

If the Cap increases say 6 million next year, we would probably need a roll back that is more than the 6 million for the amnesty buy out to occur.

I don't see it nessessary if there ends up being a net game in cap space.

isnt it kind of a moot point with the cba expiring?

teams want to reduce revenue % to players, probably want a rollback, all kinds of **** has to get settled before there can be an impactful cap increase.

Can't make big signings until the uncertainty with the cba is resolved

I honestly don't think it's fair to judge a goaltender until you put a half decent defense in front of him

Before we start tossing around long term, mult-million deals-- I would wait till the new cba is in place. There are teams that have trouble meeting the floor and I think until we know what the NHLPA battle plan is, we should be conservative what we do

Some of you guys just can not resist bashing Horcoff. Smyth has sucked that last 20 to 30 games but he has gotten a free pass. Horcoff is playing the tough minutes. HIs job right now is to buy time for Nuge and Gagner to develop

I don't think Smyth has gotten a free ride. I've talked to many Oiler fans who feel he's over the hill.

No ***** .... Cap should be 40 - 50 tops ... enough over-paying people in sports already.

Not really much of a surprise with wpg replacing atl.....just the new jets jerseys being purchased in Manitoba probably increased the cap by a mill, not to mention a sold out arena for 41 games

Doesn't the CBA expire before the start of next season? Pretty hard to predict the cap number if we don't have a CBA yet.
