They probably need to do something about the cap floor as it's likely to become ridiculous and untenable for a few franchises soon. Feel free to take Horcoff from us guys, he's a great cap filler, lol.

Maybe a better revenue sharing system will be added to help the poorer teams, I can't see the floor being remove all together
Spending on talent to fix a glaring, gaping blackhole on the blueline is... bad?
Seriously, if the cap is going up again (barring the CBA negotiations) then spending shouldn't even be a concern. Marincin, Gernat, Musil and Klefbom are yeeeeears away from contributing on the Edmonton Oilers and we'll be well beyond Hall, Eberle, RNH and the 2012 draftee's entry level contracts by then.
Unless... some of you have no problem with being the league's doormat for a further five years.
If the cap goes up to $70M, Horcoff's contract takes up less than 8% of the available cap space. It's still not a good situation, but it's not crippling either.
Goes to show that signing a player long-term is rarely a bad choice, if you can avoid injury - inflation tends to make even the worst contract manageable over time.
Can we interest you both in being the blueline double feature for a fast up and coming NHL team on the brink of breakout success? If so, pack your bags and plan how to spend $9 million each for the next 8 years.
Not really much of a surprise with wpg replacing atl.....just the new jets jerseys being purchased in Manitoba probably increased the cap by a mill, not to mention a sold out arena for 41 games
There is also the new US TV deal.
I am not surprised by this. I thought for quite a while that we would be seing a cap in the $69M+ range, though $72M would be a huge jump.
This will make July 1st very interesting. Teams will have lots of money to spend but will not know how the CBA will roll out.
The few high end UFA's could make out like absolute bandits.
I still think that this is very good timing. The owners could get a roll back on the % of HHR that goes to the players without actually having to roll existing salaries back much if at all. But to make this work teams would have to be very careful in July.

The CBA expires on Sept 15. The new cap would be in place on July 1.
But what if the new CBA changes the split between revenue sharing? A 1 or 2% change in this structure could dramatically change the cap situation.
I actually expect this. But lets assume that we would be looking at a cap of $70M.
Right now the players get 57% of HHR. Here is what the cap would be (assuming the same $16M range if the players got xx%
So as you can see, even a roll back to 50% which would be quite extreme would give a cap that is close to what it is right now.
Lots of things could happen. For example they could expand the range of the cap to something like midpoint +/- $20M and even under the 50% scenario the cap would g0 up this year by about $1M.
My guess is that we will see some sort of rollback on the HHR % but I doubt it will be all the way to 50%. Maybe 53%? And there are a few revenue items that the NHLPA might get thrown into the calculation as compensation that might mitigate a tiny bit of this loss.
So lets say that they did cut back to 53% and that the range increased to $20M. You'ld have a cap at $67.6M, a floor at $47.6M, the owners get to keep about $4M extra per team, and no one needs to ge their salary cut.
In any case, so long as things stay reasonably close to how they are now I think the fact that the cap may go this high in July is actually a very good thing for the Oilers.
Some of you guys just can not resist bashing Horcoff. Smyth has sucked that last 20 to 30 games but he has gotten a free pass. Horcoff is playing the tough minutes. HIs job right now is to buy time for Nuge and Gagner to develop
That's a load. The very definition of buying time for whatever is that you are able to keep a certain level by pushing yourself until the new kid(s) is ready to take over... If you're tanking badly already it can not by definition apply. May as well put Ebs and RNH on the PK.
No, Horc is there for a few reasons I have no ******* clue of but mostly because he's a veteran amongst kids and a good leader. No "time-buying" by any measure.

Doormats get allll of the sweet, delicious high draft picks.

Cap goes up, the future contracts for our elite guys like Ebs, Hall, RNH, whomever we draft first this year, go up accordingly as well. That goes for all contracts on all teams. Unless the new CBA lowers the max a player can make in a year (never going to happen)this isn't a free $5M to spend willy nilly.

I am not sure it has really worked that way though. The cap has gone up a lot. Here are the players in the league who signed $7M+ contracts, when they signed them and the value of the same in 2011-2012.
You will notice that all but 4 of these deals are at least 2 years old. It also looks like the trend is the top players are not getting the same proportion of the cap as in earlier years. In fact, Stamkos, Doughty, Thorton and Weber would be the four cheapest players on this list.
In a couple years replace Whitney with Klefbom and Smyth, Horcoff, Belanger etc retire, leave, whatever and replace them with Hamilton, Pitlick free agents etc.
a few years down the road, if our prospects pan out, I'd like to see:
As our top three lines. I know, it's wishful thinking assuming Hamilton and Pitlick will end up being legit NHL offensive threats, but I think having either one of them on the right line, they will excel. All three of these lines have a good mix size, speed, scoring touch and playmaking. I think it's best to have three balanced likes than one stacked line of Hall-RNH-Eberle.
