I guess it depends on what tense he was talking about. A smarted would be the correct tense if he was talking about that hurt.

You might be right, I've just never heard the phrase uttered that way before and if Butch taught me something today, I'm going to go outside and start looking for fire and brimstone as clearly the end of days are near.
