Jordan Staal

Okay, I hope I don't get lambasted for raising this question...but, would it be farfetched to see Pittsburgh trading Jordan Staal this summer? I only ask this question because of cap implications. Rumor out there is the cap could go up to roughly seventy million next season. However, Pittsburgh has a lot of their stars with expiring contacts. This year Matt Niskanen is a RFA and they just resigned Kunitz & Neal but the following year the best player Sidney Crosby is a UFA as is Jordan Staal. As well as, Cooke & Dupuis. The year after that Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, Brooks Oprik and Kris Kunitz again! followed by Marc-Andre Fleury the year after that.

There is no way they can afford to keep all these stars. Staal makes 4.5 mil/season and will surely be wanting more money! Can Pittsburgh justify signing Staal to a long-term contract north of 5 mil/season to play 3rd line center?

I think its in Pittsburgh's best interest to move him after going for it all this year and then look to move him on draft day.

Thoughts? Sorry for the long post!

Cheers.

Staal will not ever be moved. End of discussion.

What would Pitts be looking at in return? Defense? 1 for 1 or quality for quantity deal?

Cap will probably go up.. and they will trade a defenseman not named Letang before they trade Staal.

Staal is great and any team would love to have him. Reality is he's a top 2 center on most teams but he's playing behind arguably the two of the best if not the best in the league. I doubt he's going to take a serious pay cut to stay...You could easily trade him for a legit winger to play with Crosby and a defensive specialist center to fill the hole left by moving Staal.

Also, he might want to try and be the go-to-guy on a different team. Prove he's capable of being a top player in this league! Why risk him walking as an UFA at the end of next season.

you are restricting yourself by tying up potentially 25 million dollars for 3 player...that isn't smart regardless if the cap goes up. Even if Crosby and Malkin resign for the same amount of money and Staal takes a 5.5 mil/season contract; Letang's contract will be north of 6 mil/season you are looking at 30 +million for 4 players thats outrageous!

Or they could keep him and move Martin for a winger/cap-space to sign one. There is no scenario where Jordan Staal leaves aside from Staal wanting to leave.

Your problem begins with you considering Cooke, Dupuis, Oprik, and Kunitz as Stars. They may be good players, but they are easily more replaceable then Staal. They are not "stars".

Also take into account that Sids future is major question mark right now. Their is 0 chance that Pitt moves Staal.

My mistake for not clarifying. I meant Staal, Crosby, Malking, Fleury, Letang & Neal are the stars and the other guys mentioned are the depth that are really important to the success of the team.

Pittsburgh will resign Crosby regardless of his health issues and still pay him top dollar if he demands it. I'm simply suggesting that it might be wise to move Staal as Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Fleury cannot!

If one of your arguments for trading Jordan Staal is that Matt Niskanen needs to be re-signed, you may need to go back to the drawing board.

Ah, the "Pens won't be able to afford all their stars" threads...confounding logical thought and ignoring history since 2006.

Better question:

What would fans of opposition teams be comfortable with their GM offering a UFA Staal at his current production/value?

They can re-sgin Sid all they want. He could sign for league minimum, but that doesnt mean a thing if he cant play.

If you asked Dan Bylsma and Ray Shero to design a hockey player that fits the mold of how they want their team to play you would get Jordan Staal. Shero will move heaven and earth to keep him.

If we need to create cap space we'll get rid of Martin. Staal won't be moving, he's one of, if not the best 3rd C and an amazingly good defensive center. Playing amazing this year too.

This. If it ever got to the point where the Pens needed some cap space to re-sign Staal, someone like Martin would be moved to free up that space. The Pens aren't going to let Staal go, or trade Staal, while keeping Martin.

Staal only leaves if he wants to, and there is literally not a better team to join than the team he is already on.

Penguins have no salary cap implications, and won't have any until they need to re-sign Letang in 2 years.

Pretty simple here: Pens will continue to keep Staal until Jordan makes it obvious that he won't sign in Pittsburgh. Pens aren't going to move him even in that scenario. It's just the way they do things.

Staal, 1st and Scott Harrington/Eric Tangradi
for
1st Overall (Columbus) - Nail Yakupov

Dupuis-Malkin-Neal
Kunitz-Crosby-Yakupov

Thats the only way I see Staal moving.
